By calculating how old the rocks are where we find these ancient compasses, we can figure out how long ago the magnetized parts were locked in. That tells us which direction was magnetic north tens of thousands of years ago. Surprisingly, itrsquo;s not always the same as north is now. Occasionally the poles change places. What is the reversal period like? So, did the north pole drift slowly southward, so that at some point magnetic north was in, say Mexico city? No. The rocks tell us that, during pole reversals, there is a several thousand year period during which the earthrsquo;s magnetic field is either gone or very much weakened. At these times north and south become arbitrary terms. Eventually the magnetic field re-establishes itself, and it seems to be a matter of chance which side comes out north and which south. 201111/161270Three years after the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia, the temporary ceasefire lines between the two look increasingly like permanent borders. In the heart of the Caucasus mountains, this ancient Georgian watch tower is useful once again. We are talking about violent rioters who were hurling rocks," he said. 201105/136236Britain to Host G-20 Summit in April英国将主办下届二十国集团峰会 Britain is to host the next financial crisis summit of the G-20 group of industrialized and emerging economies. India Gives Pakistan More Details on Mumbai Attack印向巴提供更多孟买袭击案资料 India has given Pakistan new information about last year's terrorist siege of Mumbai. A Pakistani diplomat says the dossier will help move forward the investigation into the attack, which left dead more than 160 people at two hotels and other sites which were hit. India has begun handing over additional documentation requested by Pakistan related to last November's terrorist attack on Mumbai. Pakistan had asked India to reply to 30 specific questions after New Delhi gave Islamabad in January a dossier about the terrorists and their attack on India's commercial capital. That led to Pakistan acknowledging the attack was partly planned on its soil but said it needed additional answers. India's foreign minister, Pranab Mukherjee, says the answers are comprehensive and further information will be in Islamabad shortly. The annexes, which contain the details of the information, which they sought for, runs through hundreds of pages," he said. "And they wanted it to have before the 16th [of March]. We'll be y to give it to them well before that." India's home minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram, says his government now expects Islamabad to move forward quickly with its investigation and hand over suspects to New Delhi for prosecution or carry out justice and punishment in Pakistan. Pakistani high commissioner to India, Shahid Malik, confirms receipt of the requested answers. It would be helpful to us in carrying forward the investigations that are under way in Pakistan," he said. Indian media reports say the materials include recording of telephone conversations between the attackers and their handlers, as well as forensic materials, such as DNA samples and fingerprints. India blames the 60-hour attack on the outlawed terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, believed to have been created by Pakistani intelligence agencies to fight Indian rule in the divided Kashmir region. Ten heavily-armed gunmen, who India has identified as Pakistani nationals, went on a 60-hour rampage in Mumbai, laying siege to a pair of luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a major railway station. Indian commandos killed nine attackers. Brown-headed cowbirds are robin-sized black birds whose range covers most of North America. From a people’s point of view cowbirds are what we might call deadbeat parents. Cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, and the cowbird nestlings are raised by the foster parents. Since the cowbirds spend their formative months with birds of an entirely different species which has separate habits, songs, etc., “How does a cowbird know it’s a cowbird?” A good question, since singing the right songs and making the right moves are essential to establishing territory and attracting mates, it’s vital that one do these things right. One would think that the cowbird’s behavior would be “hardwired”, that it would just know what it is. But work done by Meredith West and her colleagues has shown that this is not the case.【生词注释】cowbird n. 201110/156432

UN Security Council Imposes New Sanctions on N. Korea联合国安理会对北韩实施新制裁 After more than two weeks of negotiations among the permanent five veto-wielding members of the Security Council, the full 15-member council adopted a resolution Friday condemning and sanctioning North Korea for its May 25 underground nuclear test. The action came as concerns grow that Pyongyang may be preparing for yet another nuclear test. U.S. envoy Rosemary DiCarlo said Resolution 1874 provides a strong and united international response to North Korea that its behavior is unacceptable. This resolution will give us new tools to impair North Korea's ability to proliferate and threaten international stability," she said. Among its provisions, Resolution 1874 strengthens an existing arms embargo and expands it to include a ban on all weapons exports from North Korea. It also allows for the inspection of suspect cargo on ships and airplanes, and the confiscation and disposal of any banned items that are found. On the financial side, the resolution forbids transactions and money flows that could support Pyongyang's missile or nuclear program. It also prohibits all financial assistance other than for humanitarian or development purposes. Britain's Deputy Ambassador Philip Parnham was one of several council members who was quick to point out that these sanctions are targeted at North Korea's leaders and not its people. These measures are carefully targeted at the nuclear and missile and weapons of mass destruction programs of North Korea, we are not talking here about general economic sanctions. These measures should not adversely affect the economic situation of the people of North Korea, which as we all know is aly dire," he said. One of the resolution's strengths is that it has the backing of Pyongyang's allies China and Russia. Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yesui told reporters after the vote that Beijing was firmly opposed to North Korea's nuclear test and wants to see a denuclearized Korean peninsula. He said China voted for the resolution because it is balanced and offers a way out for Pyongyang. As you can see from the language, the resolution not only contains sanction measures, it also contains some positive messages to the DPRK. It also emphasizes the importance of addressing the DPRK nuclear issue peacefully, through political and diplomatic means," he said. The text also provides for the possibility of the lifting of or suspending of sanctions if North Korea complies with several measures. North Korea's ambassador was not present at Friday's vote. In the past Pyongyang has dismissed Security Council action against it. The council has imposed sanctions on North Korea before, but has not strictly enforced them, in part, because North Korea participated in the Six Party Talks. But recently, Pyongyang has said it is done with dialogue, and ratcheted up rhetoric, saying it would use its nuclear weapons against any country violating its sovereignty. 06/74163

A new study finds that men who drink a lot of coffee are less likely to develop potentially fatal prostate cancer. It's the latest study to show a beneficial effect from one of the world's favorite beverages. The study included about 50,000 men who reported their coffee consumption in questionnaires every four years. Over more than two decades, the moderate coffee drinkers were somewhat less likely to develop any form of prostate cancer. But lead author Kathryn Wilson of the Harvard School of Public Health says the real difference showed up when the researchers looked at the most serious prostate cancers. Men who drink six or more cups of coffee per day had a 60 percent lower risk of lethal prostate cancer than men who drank no coffee," she says. "And we saw this reduction in risk for both regular and decaffeinated coffee." Coffee is a chemically complex brew, full of antioxidants and other compounds that may affect the development of prostate cancer. 201105/137364

U.S. economic impact on China As China prepares to release GDP and inflation data, investors worry about negative spillover from the U.S. markets Investors around the world have been on a wild ride, stemming from the concerns about the world's top economy, the ed States. While the global equity markets have taken a tumble, what's the economic impact at all. Here in Asia, investors might get some insight first thing Thursday morning, When one of the fastest growing economies in the world, China, releases its closely-watched GDP data along with inflation figures. We're looking at the number of 10.1% for second quarter of GDP. So it is a slowdown, but you know, 10% is still a kind of double-digit growth. The news from China will come on the hills of a second day of testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who's noted that the US economy continues to face "numerous difficulties".The possibility of high energy crisis, tighter credit conditions and a still deeper contraction in the housing markets, all represent significant downside risks to the outlook for growth. As the US consumer spending continues to slow in the rest of the year, and the growth in export from China and rest of Asia will come into slow as well. This is the Dow sits near its lowest level in nearly two years. The US dollar's taken a dropping, falling to new lows against the Euro. And investors are trying to get a handle on the troubles facing housing finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Even oil which had been heading in only one direction up 80% since July of last year, has seen its biggest one-day plunge this week in 17 years. But in the end.We think that it's too early for China now to worry about slowdown. The inflation is still the major risk.So maybe a bit of slowdown for China isn't such a bad thing, after all.Alex Zober, CNN, Hong Kong. 200812/57871
