This approach has cost him a succession of jobs, but it has not stopped him from having a successful career. There are many reasons for this. Mr Mayo hates being criticised, but has few reservations about criticising others. He has a deep belief in capitalism, but holds many of its leading practitioners in contempt; J.P. Morgans Jamie Dimon is almost alone in drawing praise. For the friendly analyst there are gourmet meals, rides on private jets, subsidised nights at strip clubs and, with luck, a bigger slice of profits. By contrast, when in 1999 Mr Mayo issued a 1,000-page report, telling the industry he covered that the good times were over, the consequences were uncomfortable. The report made his reputation but cost him his job. Some of his best calls, notably a persistent scepticism about Citigroup, took years to be proved right. Mr Mayo offers the usual reasons: corruption, lousy disclosure, ridiculous compensation packages for incompetent managers who are overseen by incompetent regulators, conflicts of interests that are little short of rife. All of this he illustrates with names and dates, a close-up view of venality that, by itself, makes “Exile on Wall Street” a story worth ing. Since the financial crisis, Mr Mayos 1999 report has become the conventional wisdom. A lawyer checking in on a colleague automatically sees a picture of her on the phone when she is, in fact, on the phone. Clients use the platform too, commenting on and even changing their own documents as they are being drawn up. Employees who underestimate how long it will take cannot simply jack up the bill—they must take the hit themselves. But if a lawyer finishes his work faster than promised, he gets a third of the savings. The client also gets a third, as does Clearspire. Yet clients priorities are exactly the reverse. So Clearspire has an unusual dual structure. American law firms cannot have non-lawyers sharing fees with lawyers. (Britain used to be the same, but will ditch this pointless rule this year.) George Kappaz is a private-equity boss who recently gave a complex job to Clearspire (structuring an equity package for Astrata, one his funds firms). He estimates that it cost a quarter of what he would have paid the big firms he used before, and Clearspires work was just as good. (Many of its lawyers come from top-notch law firms.) Can it make money? A company like 11-year-old Axiom proves that clients have an appetite for alternative models. Axiom either seconds some of its hundreds of lawyers to a company, takes on a whole chunk of a client firms legal work (such as commercial contracts), or performs ;discovery; (reviewing documents for litigation). Rather than charging by the hour for each lawyer, it asks for a single flat fee, or charges for a team by the week or the month. After it sent its consultants, recruited from the likes of McKinsey and Accenture, to clients to help them trim their legal spending, the clients gave Axiom more work. Revenue grew from m in 2008 to m in 2010. This year the firm expects to rake in 0m. Companies were always under pressure to cut their legal bills, says Mark Harris, Axioms boss. The lawyers make nothing, but use the service to drum up custom. This kind of heft will bring it up against LegalZoom, the biggest seller of online forms and easy, repeatable legal services for small businesses and individuals. In 1946 a couple in a Manhattan apartment building asked their janitor, a biracial Jamaican New Yorker newly returned from naval service in the second world war, to install a set in their flat. The task completed, they gave him two theatre tickets as payment. The janitor, having no money for the dinner that a proper date would have included, went on his own to see “Home is the Hunter”, a play about black servicemen returning to America after the war. The two of them hatched get-rich-quick schemes—Mr Poitier wanted to market an extract of Caribbean conch as an aphrodisiac—and they shared theatre tickets: they could only afford a single ticket between them, so one would attend before the interval and one after, then each would fill the other in. Mr Poitier got his break first: he took Mr Belafontes place in a play that the latter, still employed as a janitor, missed because he had to collect his tenants rubbish. King was then 26, and a preacher at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, while Mr Belafonte was 28 and newly crowned “Americas Negro matinée idol”. Mr Belafonte was sceptical of both religion and non-violence (“I wasnt nonviolent by nature,” he explains, “or if I was, growing up on Harlems streets had knocked it out of me”), but was won over by Kings humility. The book is also too long. Mr Belafontes ramblings about business deals that went sour and his agonising over the extraordinary privileges his children enjoyed grow tedious. And then there is his political judgment. Standing with Martin Luther King junior to fight injustice and oppression is quite different from standing with practised political oppressors such as Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro. Still, Mr Belafonte does have a remarkable song to sing.
