Capello hints Beckham's England career is overEngland coach Fabio Capello hinted on Wednesday that David Beckham's international career could be over.Beckham was unable to play in the World Cup due to an Achilles injury suffered while on loan at AC Milan in March, but the LA Galaxy midfielder had hoped to return to England duty when he was fully fit.The former Manchester ed and Real Madrid star went to the World Cup as part of Capello's backroom staff but the Italian, speaking ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Hungary at Wembley, made it clear there was little chance of a recall for the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign."I say thank you very much for helping me at the World Cup but probably he is a little bit old," Capello told ITV.If Capello is true to his word, the 35-year-old former England captain will end his international career with 115 caps, the most number for any England outfield player but 10 short of Peter Shilton's overall national record.Vocabulary:Achilles: 跟腱backroom:(工作)秘密的,在幕后进行的friendly: 友谊赛cap: a selection for a representative team, usually for a national squad(入选国家队,代表国家队出场)outfield player: 外场球员,也就是除守门员外的球员背单词 — 装英语词汇201008/111248Gordon Brown has arrived in India for a two-day visit, pledging to forge stronger trade links and cooperate against terrorism. But the fate of Northern Rock continues to dominate his tour. The prime minister denied he's aly struck a deal with Sir Richard Branson. Our political editor Gary Gibbon reports from Delhi.Well Gordon Brown's here in India to talk about aid, trade and counter-terrorism. He attended a women's empowerment event when he arrived here in Delhi. And a short while after that, he had this to say about how he wanted more international cooperation on counter-terrorism.What I would like to see is greater contact between our two countries in winning the battle of hearts and minds, isolating extremist ideologues who are trying to poison young people and the views that they have.Tomorrow Gordon Brown's gonna be talking about what he calls global governance, changes to institutions like ed Nations. He wants India to have a seat on the Security Council. But he wants a lot else as well. He's talking about a sort of force, a bit like the Blue Berets, the military forces that the ed Nations currently deployed to troubled countries. He wants a backup as it were a blue suit force which could include teachers, judges, doctors, people who can come in when a country is in dire difficulty. But there is another issue that is dogging him around here and it is in a way personified by the ever-present, Sir Richard Branson, boss of Virgin. He's been following the prime minister on his tour and insisting at every turn that there are no secret negotiations going on between the two of them when it comes to the sale of Northern Rock. This is what the prime minister himself had to say about that today.I can reassure people entirely that any negotiations about Northern Rock will be taking place in London. If a number of commercial companies are expressing interest in the future of Northern Rock, then it is right that the government explore all options available to us. But as I said the prime minister is gonna be talking about the ed Nations and other matters tomorrow when he's here in Delhi but his heart and mind are gonna be very much back in London where the Chancellor will be making a very important statement about Northern Rock. The prime minister wants people to think that he's no longer on the back foot on Northern Rock, he's taken a grip of the situation and that he is not bailing out whoever buys Northern Rock. Will it look like that? Will it sound like that? Will people think that the government is actually making a sweetener for Richard Branson or whoever buys Northern Rock? That will be the key moment tomorrow. Gordon Brown will be watching from a distance here in Delhi.200810/53540UN's Ban Calls Gaza Suffering 'Heartbreaking'潘基文:加沙惨况“令人心碎” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has become the first international leader to visit the Gaza Strip following Israel's 22-day offensive. Israeli troops continue to pull out of the battered enclave, where Palestinian medical officials say 1,300 people died in the assault. The U.N. chief got a first-hand look at the devastation left by three weeks of Israeli air and ground attacks on Hamas targets. He called for Israel and Hamas to stick to the fragile cease-fire they began Sunday and urged them to exercise restraint. Mr. Ban did not meet with Hamas officials. The cease-fire is holding, but there were more signs the dispute between Israel and Hamas is far from settled. In calling its cease-fire, Israel demanded Hamas not fire rockets into its territory and refrain from re-arming. Hamas said Israel must pull out all of its troops and open Gaza's borders or face new attacks. Israeli troops and tanks continue to withdraw, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni suggested Israel is not prepared to lift its blockade of the Strip. Livni said Israel opposes any dialogue with Hamas and does not consider the group a legitimate organization, but rather a terrorist group. She said the only thing that Israel needs to negotiate with Hamas is the release of Gil'ad Shalit, an Israeli soldier who has been held prisoner in Gaza since before the assault. Hamas' military infrastructure was severely damaged in the Israeli offensive. But the group appeared to retain some support among Gaza residents. Hundreds of people gathered in Gaza City claiming victory for Hamas, and urging international recognition of the Islamic militant group. Others continued sifting through the rubble of their homes and businesses. Early estimates from officials inside Gaza say damage estimates reach nearly billion, with thousands of homes destroyed. After seeing the devastation firsthand, Mr. Ban called the scenes heartbreaking. He called the destruction "shocking and alarming." Mr. Ban spoke against the backdrop of a U.N. building that was still smoldering from an Israeli hit last week. 01/61336The search for a bargain and the hope for an unrecognized treasure draws hundreds of people to a tiny East Coast town each week. Every Wednesday, they descend upon a cavernous warehouse in Crumpton, Maryland, wandering past rows of long tables where they're liable to find everything from fedora hats to fishing rods and china vases to corner cupboards. He’s the third generation of his family to work here. Third of women are earning more Nearly a third of women are the main bwinners in their household, according to a major survey.Thirty percent earn more than their partners and a further 19 percent earn the same amount.Researchers said that in many relationships it was no longer assumed that the man would bring in the bigger income, especially in a time of widesp redundancies. In a significant shift in attitudes, four out of ten women said that the career of whichever partner had the highest income would take precedence in the relationship. In one in ten families, a house husband looks after the children and does the chores while their female partner works full time.Ten percent of women admitted this role reversal had put strains on their relationship and some said it had even led to them parting company. The Women and Work Survey 2010, commissioned by Grazia magazine, found that almost half of full-time mothers disliked not earning their own money. And two thirds of the mothers among the 2,000 women in the survey said they wanted to keep working in some way after having children.A slightly higher number of those with children under three said they would prefer to work - preferably part-time - rather than stay at home.Victoria Harper of Grazia said: 'Women are getting good jobs when they graduate, and working up the career ladder faster than they have ever done.'This means that there has to be more fluidity between the roles of men and women in a relationship and when they have children.'Instead of the have-it-all woman who tries to do everything, we are now seeing cross-over couples who share roles.'Vocabulary:redundancy: the situation when somebody has to leave their job because there is no more work available for them (因劳动力过剩而造成的裁员,解雇)take precedence in:处于优先地位put strains on:使……

Are Vitamins Necessary Dietician Nancy Clark says food is a better source of vitamins than pills Hello, I’m Elizabeth Vargas and welcome to 20/20 in touch. Trying to find a way to cut back on your spending, maybe you can save on all those vitamin supplements you’ve been buying. Doctor Tim Johnson has a new prescription for your physical and financial health. 24-year-old graduate student Ashley Mason is the picture of health. She does everything possible to stay that way. She watches her diet, exercises everyday. And she takes supplements to prevent health problem as she gets older.Stop wrinkles before they start. Take these pills before you get sick. And it all sounds like a very good idea to me.In fact, Ashley takes nearly a dozen different pills everyday.Every week, I sort them into this sorter. But Ashley is not a finale. Millions of people follow a regiment like this. Last year American spent 22.5 billion dollars on dietary supplements, hoping to buy a protection against the whole range of illnesses. This is what Ashley is counting on to keep her healthy. A multi-vitamin, fish oil, flaxseed oil, calcium, B-vitamins, magnesium, glucosamine and vitamin E. It’s expensive, but she believes it’s an investment in her health. It’s a lot of money for a graduate student to be paying every month for medication, while it’s not even really medication, I’m not sick.Physically, Ashley feels fine. It’s her pocketbook that hurts. A student on a tight budget, she's scraping together a thousand dollars a year for all her supplements. And since the manufactures don’t have to prove to consumers that any of this stuff actually works, 20/20 set out to see if taking all these pills is smart medicine.Doctor Eric Rimm of the Harvard School of Public Health says a simple multi-vitamin can provide a sort of safety net against the less-than-perfect diet.If you’re really on a generic mouthful vitamin which I think is probably enough for most people if you’re taking a supplement. The only thing where I would think there may be benefit would be taking from...er, will be taking vitamin D.Vitamin D, the so-called sunshine vitamin because it’s made when sunlight gets your skin.Every tissue and cell in your body needs vitamin D for maximum health.01/61367

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is appealing to wealthy countries not to cut development aid or resort to protectionist trade practices in the face of the global economic crisis. Rice was the opening speaker at a White House-organized summit on international development. The White House summit was organized in part to highlight foreign aid efforts by the Bush administration, which Rice says collectively amount to the biggest U.S. international development initiative since the post-World War Two Marshall Plan. But the proceedings have been overshadowed by the global market and credit crisis and there is deep concern among participants that U.S. and other world development aid will fall victim to crisis-related austerity moves. In her opening address, Rice said moves to trim foreign aid and protect home markets are understandable under the circumstances, but in the long run, counterproductive. When times are hard, as they are now, every nation is focused on protecting its own interests. That is entirely legitimate and it is to be expected. But what we cannot do, what we must not do, is to allow our generosity and our concern for others to fall victim to today's crisis. Reneging on our commitments to the world's poor cannot be an austerity measure," she said. Rice said while recent foreign-aid budgets might now seem unaffordable, the world cannot afford not to come to the aid of poor, weak and poorly governed third-world states that could be sources of regional or global instability. The secretary also warned of the slide into trade protectionism that economists believe made the economic depression of the 1930s even worse. She said completion of the stalled Doha round of international tariff-cutting negotiations would send a powerful signal that the world's response to the current crisis will be fundamentally different than the past. Rice was followed to the podium by Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who praised U.S. aid to her country following its civil war, and said the world looks to the ed States to lead the way out of the current crisis. Developing countries will be looking to the ed States to step up during these turbulent times and emerge as the true global leader for democracy, stability and expanding economic opportunities for the poor," she said. "Strong global leadership and vision, alongside local country commitment, is needed now more than ever." The elected Liberian leader said her country is now well on its way to stability and can be a model for a West African region known in the recent past for civil warfare, warlords, child soldiers and so-called blood diamonds. 200810/53607

Political Fallout in Wake of Terror Attacks Taking Toll in Mumbai孟买所在邦最高官员批评声中辞职 Top officials in the Indian state, Maharashtra, are becoming political causalities of last week's terror attack. The 60-hour assault on Mumbai, blamed on Islamic militants, killed an estimated 175 people, including at least 18 foreigners. The two top officials of the state in which Mumbai is located appear to be on their way out, in wake of last week's terror attack. Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilisrao Deshmukh says he is willing to quit to take responsibility for perceived security shortcomings. Media reports say the state had received intelligence warnings Mumbai would be attacked. At a raucous news conference, where reporters demanded a clear statement, the chief minister would only acknowledge he is offering his resignation and leaving his fate in the hands of his Congress Party bosses. Whatever decision high command takes … I was telling you in very, very simple understandable words," said Deshmukh. "You don't need any more explanation." Deshmukh also came under fire for having his movie star son, as well as a top Bollywood filmmaker, accompany him on a tour of the devastated Taj Mahal Hotel, while bodies were still being removed from the attack site. Deshmukh's number-two is also quitting. Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil called the unprecedented siege of Mumbai "a small incident." That comment generated an uproar of criticism. The first political casualty at the federal level was the unpopular home minister. He stepped down Sunday. Calls for the ouster of Shivraj Patil had been heard even before last week's attack on Mumbai. Patil had faced criticism for the perceived poor government response to a continuing wave of bombings, this year, in various Indian cities. Patil is being replaced by the respected finance minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram, who tells reporters he is moving reluctantly to the home ministry, which oversees domestic security. I would be less than honest if I do not say I was disinclined," said Chidambaram. "But, in a situation like the one we find ourselves, the final call is taken by the party leader - in my case the Congress [Party] president and the prime minister. The prime minister, Manmohan Singh, is taking the finance portfolio, a post he held previously. The political turmoil is not unexpected. Analysts say the governing coalition, led by the Congress Party, has to make changes, amid rising public anger about its perceived inability to halt terror attacks across India. The top opposition party, the BJP, is saying the government, led by Prime Minister Singh, is no longer fit to stay in power. 200812/57759
