Parasites have a nasty reputation. But is it really fair to fear these little guys?Well, yes. And if you don#39;t think so,here#39;s why these terrifying creatures are worth ofavoiding at all costs. As if you need another reason to hate mosquitoes,When they bite humans, they can leave the larvae of the parasitic filarial worm. These worms live and grow in our bodies, sometimes taking years to mature into full adults, leaving only inconspicuous rashes and sores.Years later, they work together to block the vessels of your lymphatic system, creating a build-up fluid, leaving to diseases like elephantasis,This is one of the leading causes of disability in the world. Another worm worth hating is the pinworm.Pinworm eggs are often eaten because of contaminated or dirty hands. The eggs hatch and mature in your gut,at which point the adult female exits the anus to lay a new batch of eggs on the surrounding skin,Your butt hole become a nest. This causes intense itching, often leading to recontaminated hands,or finger nails, which can end up in your mouth again, restarting the cycle.Feel like scratching your bum? Do yourself a favor and wash those hands and fingernails,On the other side of the body live the lovly public lice.Sometimes called crabs.Though it is not uncommon to find these buggers in your eyebrows, beard or even eye lashes, the itching is from an allergic reaction to their saliva. And it would take treatment with medication or shaving it all of to get rid of them,Of course, abstinence and no sex works well as a preventive measure.along with not sharing your undies with other people. Some parasites are meant for marine animals, but end up in humans at the goodness of our...guts?The anisakis nematode infects humans after eating raw or undercooked fish like sushi, which contains the larvae. The worms penetrate our gut wall and causes abdominal pain, nausea and even vomiting. But nobody really wins this one.As the nematode can#39;t mature in the human gut and eventually dies,The tongue biter is another marine parasite. This tongue-eating louse finds its suitable fish and chews off its tongue, only to cling to the stub in its place. Here they stay feeding on the fish#39;s blood, all the while maiding and dispersing their progeny into the ocean. And finally, the wonderful cortdyceps, which are fungi known for creating zombie ants. The fungi takes over the ant#39;s body and mind making it leave the colony and begin, climbing upwards to more ideal temperature and humidity. The ant then bites onto stem or leave and get locked into position until it dies. At which point, the fungus burst through the ants head and sps outward.Could such a parasite ever affect on humans? For everyone#39;s sake,we hope not. Article/201501/353310Alexa Meade 用一种创新的手法创造艺术。 Article/201511/399301

Editors are busy, and they’re going to toss your application right into the bin if it’s missing critical information, is incorrectly formatted, or arrives after the deadline. STEP 2 See eye-to-eye2. Send a photo in which the eyebrows of you and your betrothed are on the exact same level, with your heads close together. That’s what the New York Times prefers, and they, after all, are the mother of all wedding announcement sections. STEP 3 Be charitable3. If you’re involved with a charitable organization, mention it. Well, get over it. Article/201410/333465

The (Secret)City of London,Part 1:History伦敦金融城的秘密(一)历史The Great City of London, known for its historical landmarks, modern skyscrapers, ancient markets and famous bridges, is arguably the financial capital of the world and home to over eleven thousand people. Wait, what? Eleven thousand? That#39;s right! But the City of London is a different place from London, though London is also known for its historical landmarks, modern skyscrapers, ancient markets, famous bridges and is home to the government, royal family and seven million people. But, if you look map of London crafted by a careful cartographer, that map will have a one-square mile hole near the middle—it#39;s here where the City of London lives inside of the city named London. Despite these confusingly close names, the two Londons have separate city halls and elect separate mayors, who collect separate taxes to fund separate police who enforce separate laws. The Mayor of the City of London has a fancy title ;The Right Honorable the Lord Mayor of London; to match his fancy outfit. He also gets to ride in a golden carriage and work in a Guildhall while the mayor of London has to wear a suit, ride a bike and work in an office building. The City of London also has its own flag and its own crest, which is awesome and makes London#39;s lack of either twice as sad. To top it off, the City of London gets to act more like one of the countries in the UK than just an oddly located city—for uniquely, the corporation that runs the City of London is older than the ed Kingdom by several hundred years. So how did the UK end up with two Londons, one inside of the other? Because: Romans. Two thousand years ago they came to Great Britain, killed a bunch of druids, and founded a trading post on the River Thames and named it Londonimium. Londonimium。Being Romans, they got to work, doing what Romans do: enforcing laws, increasing trade, building temples, public baths, roads, bridges and a wall to defend their work. And it#39;s this wall, which is why the current City of London exists—for though the Romans came, and the Romans went, and kingdoms rose, and kingdoms fell, the wall endured protecting the city within. And The City, governing itself and trading with the world, grew rich. A thousand years after the Romans (yet still a thousand years ago) when William the Conqueror came to Great Britain to conqueror everything and begin modern British history, he found the City of London, with its sturdy walls more challenging to defeat than farmers on open fields. So he agreed to recognize the rights and privileges City of Londoners were used to in return for them recognizing him as the new King. Though after the negotiation, William quickly built towers around the City of London, which were just as much about protecting William from the locals within as defending against the Vikings from without. This started a thousand-year long tradition whereby Monarchs always reconfirmed that ;yes; the City of London is a special, unique place that#39;s best left to its own business, while simultaneously distrusting it. Many monarchs thought the City of London was too powerful and rich. And one even built a new Capital city nearby, named Westminster, to compete with the City of London and hopefully, suck power and wealth away from it. This was the start of the second London. As the centuries passed, Westminster grew and merged with nearby towns, eventually surrounding the walled-in, and still separate City of London. But people began to call the whole urban collection ;London,; and the name became official when Parliament joined the towns together under a single municipal government with a mayor. But the Mayor of London still doesn#39;t have power over the tiny City of London, which has rules and traditions like nowhere else in the country and possibly the world. For example, the ruling monarch doesn#39;t just enter the City of London on a whim, but instead asks for permission from the Lord Mayor at a ceremony. While it#39;s not required by law, the ceremony is, unusual to say the least. The City of London also has a representative in Parliament, The Remembrancer, whose job it is to protects the City#39;s special rights.伦敦金融城在议会中同样有代表,Remembrancer(为该城的诸检察官之一,及节仪主管),他的职务是保护伦敦金融城的特殊权力。Because of this, laws passed by Parliament sometimes don#39;t apply to the City of London: most notably voting reform laws, which we#39;ll discuss next time. But if you#39;re curious for a preview, unlike anywhere else in the UK, elections in the City of London involve Medieval Guilds and modern companies. Finally, the City of London also owns and operates land and buildings far outside its border, making it quite wealthy. Once you start looking for The City#39;s Crest, you#39;ll find it in lots of unexpected places, most notably on Tower Bridge, which while being in London is operated by the City of London. These crests everywhere when combined with the City of London#39;s age and wealth and quasi-independent status make it an irresistible temptation for conspiracy nuts. Add in the oldest Masonic temple, and it#39;s not long before the crazy part of the Internet yelling about secret societies controlling the world via the finance industry from inside the City-state of London. And don#39;t forget the Reptilian Alien Queen who#39;s really behind it all. But conspiracy theories aside, the City of London is not an independent nation like the Vatican is, no matter how much you might it on the Internet, rather it#39;s a unique place in the ed Kingdom with a long and very complicated history. The wall that began all this two thousand years ago is now mostly gone, so the border between London and its secret inner city isn#39;t so obvious. Though, next time you#39;re in London, if you come across a small dragon on the street, he still guards the entrance to the city in a city in a country in a country. Article/201504/371447

Five Rules for Presentations by Nancy DuarteNancy Duarte的五个简报原则Presentations are a powerful communication medium. For more than 20 years, Duarte has developed presentations to launch products, align employees, increase company value, and propel global causes. Along the way we discovered five simple rules for creating world changing presentations. The first rules is—treat your audience as king. You audience deserves to be treated like royalty. Design a presentation that meets their needs, and not just yours. Audiences wanna know what you can do for them, why they should adopt your view, and what are the steps they need to follow to take action. Give them those things in a clear, easily understandable way, and you will undoubtedly find favor with the king. The second rule is—sp ideas and move people. Your audience didn#39;t show up to your 60-page on-screen dissertation. They#39;re there to see you, to be inspired by your message and witness the quality of your thought. You#39;re not giving your presentation to have another meeting. You#39;re there to convey meaning. So consider including imagery that powerfully illustrates your point. Sometimes moving images can inspire in a way that static slides cannot. A sequential build adds a sense of suspense. And a thought provoking moves your audience in a way that can not only change minds, but hearts. The next rule is—help them see what you are saying. Half of the people in your audience are verbal thinkers, and the other half are visual. Combining minimal text with meaningful visuals means that you will reach everyone. Brainstorm graphics that will effectively communicate your message, and then replace those words with a picture, a chart, or a diagram. Then apply a consistent treatment to your graphics to give your whole presentation a unified look, so that your audiences are attracted to, rather than distracted from your message. Rule number four—practice design, not decoration. As tempting as it is to fill your slides with stuff, often de-decorating is the best policy. Any writer or designer will tell you that 90% of the creative process is destructive. Do you have one main point? Consider just putting just one word on the slide by itself. You want them to remember a few items? Then don#39;t show everything at once. Instead, show one item at a time. Do you have a picture that accurately expresses your idea? Scale that picture so that it fills the slide. Do you know a e that says it all? Then let it say it and remove everything else. The last rule is—cultivate healthy relationships with your slides and your audience. Letting go is hard. We know, but don#39;t hide behind your slides. Breaking your dependence on your slides can do a world of good for your relationship with the audience. Reduce the amount of text to just a few words, and put the rest of the information in the notes, and then practice, practice, practice. Thinking of your slides as digital scenery allows you to connect eye-to-eye with your audience in a meaningful way. So, those are the rules, but the question remains: Why go to all these trouble? When you apply these rules, and keep the audiences#39; needs top of mind, your presentation will not only hold their attention, but also change the world. Well, at least your part of the world. Article/201505/376509
