Rabbits Down Under澳大利亚的兔子In 1859, an unassuming Australian landowner named Thomas Austin got the hunting bug. Eager for something to shoot, he released twenty-four wild rabbits onto his property and had a jolly time tracking them down. Unfortunately, some of the rabbits managed to escape and, as rabbits are known to do, began to breed like…well, rabbits.1959年,澳大利亚一位默默无名的地主——Thomas Austin在打猎上碰到了瓶颈。 By 1900, Austin was dead but his unwanted legacy lived on in the form of a rabbit infestation that sp throughout the entire Australian continent. Desperate landowners scrambled to capture over two million rabbits per year, but this hardly made a dent in the rabbit population. Rabbits, it seemed, had taken up permanent residence down under.1900年,Austin去世了。 With its long ears, twitching nose, and adorable hopping ability, the individual rabbit is fairly cute. Multiply that bunny by millions, however, and they begin to seem entirely sinister. The great Australian rabbit infestation was ecologically devastating. The buck-toothed creatures helped extinguish nearly one-eighth of Australia’s native mammal species and led to the extinction of countless numbers of plants, leading to widesp soil erosion. The Australian government tried to corral the rabbits by building so-called rabbit-proof fences across vast stretches of land. Undaunted, the rabbits burrowed under. Finally, in the 1950s, the Australians resorted to chemical warfare, injecting several rabbits with myxoma, an experimental virus known to target and kill rabbits. The virus sp, and the rabbit population dropped from six-hundred million to one-hundred million. But that’s still a lot of rabbits, and those with a natural resistance to the virus began breeding with a fury. And so, the rabbit wars carry on still. /201301/222092People say that seeing is believing-really? Take for example the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games. It went beyond the pale for organizers to fake a song before a live audience of 91,000 inside the ;Birds Nest; National Stadium, with billions also watching at home. Lin Miaoke, a cute nine-year-old girl, sang ;Ode to the Motherland; in an angelic voice. Two days later, the Chinese media broke the news that Lin Miaoke had lip-synched the song, which was in fact sung by a different girl, who is not as cute in appearance. It is unthinkable that Chen Qigang, general music director of the opening ceremony, could let such a thing happen in the first place. Maybe the pressure was too strong to let him stick to his principles. ;The reason was for national interests,; Chen said. ;The child on stage should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression,; Chen added. It is unacceptable, even immoral, to cheat an audience for whatever reason. The Olympics are about fair competition and sportsmanship. Thats why the International Olympic Committee has been strictly enforcing its anti-doping program. Doping is defined as the use of a performance-enhancing substance by athletes in competition. By extension, the use of somebody elses voice other than ones own is also an act of performance enhancing. It makes a travesty of the Olympic spirit.

3D films, cinemas great hope, have become niche products电影公司最大的希望—3D电影—让人失望了Voldemort looks no prettier in 3D3D版伏地魔并没有更好看TEN years after it took off, Hollywoods biggest film franchise has finally alighted from its broomstick. Between July 15th and July 17th Americans shelled out 9m to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2—a record for any film, in nominal terms.7月15至7月17日,《哈利波特与死亡圣器 第二部分》从美国人的口袋中掏走了1.69亿美元—这是任何影院都无法企及的记录。But barely a third of the audience opted to watch the boy wizard battle his snake-faced foe in three dimensions. Two years ago it seemed as though a new, improved 3D projection system could rescue a film business battered by falling DVD sales. Fully 71% of the box-office spending on Avatar on its opening weekend, in December , went on the 3D version. The 3D showings of Shrek Forever After accounted for 61% of American box-office spending.《怪物史瑞克》的美国票房有61%来自3D影院。Cinemas generally charge at least more for a 3D showing—far more than the glasses cost. This lucrative business is now looking flat. Despite rapid growth in digital projectors and 3D-capable screens, the proportion of total box-office spending that goes on 3D has dropped this summer. Four of the past five 3D blockbusters—Pirates of the Caribbean, Kung Fu Panda 2, Green Lantern and Harry Potter—made more money from 2D screens on their opening weekend than from 3D ones. That was true of only one widely released 3D film last summer, and none the year before. Richard Gelfond, the boss of IMAX, reckons customers have become picky.IMAX的老总Richard Gelfond认为消费者变得越来越精明了。People used to see something just because it was in 3D, he says. Now they ask how much pleasure the glasses will add. The explosive Transformers 3 did well in 3D; perhaps the 2D version was not sufficiently headache-inducing. The key to three-dimensional profits, then, is to put out hugely popular films with extraordinary special effects.
