World leaders arrived at the G20 summit in Australia this weekend to help resolve serious global crises - but they stayed for the koalas.2014年11月15日至16日,世界各国领导人飞赴澳大利亚参加G20峰会,共同商讨解决重大的全球危机。 Before getting down to the hard business of fixing the economy, ending the Ebola epidemic and getting to the bottom of the situation in Ukraine, participants of the high-level talks in Brisbane were each handed Australia#39;s cuddly mascot for a photo-op Saturday. All heads of state at the summit, from the ‘leader of the free world’ President Obama to the ‘Iron Chancellor’ Angela Merkel, proved powerless against the charms of the ridiculously photogenic animals. Even the usually stone-faced Valdimir Putin, the summit#39;s bete noire, was pictured cracking a rare smile while embracing an adorable marsupial, who appeared to be trying to escape the Russian president’s iron grip. President Obama was equally overjoyed to spend some quality time with a koala named #39;Jimbelung.#39;美国总统奥巴马见到考拉十分的高兴,同一只名为“Jimbelung”的考拉共度了难忘的时光。But Obama#39;s new furry friend did not seem very much impressed with the US commander-in-chief, and instead focused his attentions on the koala in the arms of Australia#39;s Prime Minister Tony Abbott. At one point, the two fluffy creatures even exchanged a smooch, to the obvious delight of Obama and Abbott. Meanwhile the ladies of the G20 were also treated to the ultimate Aussie experience and were led by Mr Abbott#39;s wife, Margie, through Brisbane#39;s Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary on Saturday. The G20 leaders#39; wives also getting up close and personal and got to cuddle some koalas while they also got to hand feed some Kangaroos. Chinese President Xi Jinping#39;s wife Peng Liyuan and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper#39;s wife Laureen were among the first ladies who laughed nervously as a couple of large kangaroos sidled up to help themselves to the offered food. The G20 first ladies also got to get alongside some of the country#39;s scaley reptiles, Margie Abbott braving it, decided to hold a snake. But the ‘koala diplomacy’ could only carry the western leaders so far. Once the smiles and fuzzy embraces were over, the talks hit their first major stumbling block when Mr Putin declared that he would leave Brisbane early after being threatened with additional economic sanctions if he failed to end Russian backing for rebels in Ukraine. /201411/343202

If we had to put money on it, we’d venture a guess that there are more women out there who’d rather be taller than those who’d rather be shorter. Of course, no physical desire that women have is entirely universal, but if you’re a gal who wouldn’t mind adding a couple inches to your height, you might want to keep ing. We chatted with our resident celebrity stylists, Emily Current and Meritt Elliott, who shared their insights on how you can instantly add inches to your frame just by using your wardrobe. How does the world’s top investor, at 84 years old, wake up every day and face the world with boundless energy? When he told me this in a phone call yesterday (we were talking about the death of his friend, former), I assumed he was talking about his stock portfolio. No, Buffett explained, “If I eat 2700 calories a day, a quarter of that is Coca-Cola. I drink at least five 12-ounce servings. I do it everyday.” Perhaps only a man who owns billion in Coca-Cola stock—9% of Coke, through his company, Berkshire Hathaway—would maintain such an odd daily diet. One 12-ounce can of Coke contains 140 calories. Typically, Buffett says, “I have three Cokes during the day and two at night.” When he’s at his desk at Berkshire Hathaway headquarters in Omaha, he drinks regular Coke; at home, he treats himself to Cherry Coke. “I’ll have one at breakfast,” he explains, noting that he loves to drink Coke with potato sticks. What brand of potato sticks? “I have a can right here,” he says. “U-T-Z” Utz is a Hanover, Pennsylvania-based snack maker. Buffett says that he’s talked to Utz management about potentially buying the company. Investors in Berkshire Hathaway may feel relieved that the CEO isn’t addicted to Utz Potato Stix at every breakfast. “This morning, I had a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream,” Buffett says. Asked to explain the high-sugar, high-salt diet that has somehow enabled him to remain seemingly healthy, Buffett replies: “I checked the actuarial tables, and the lowest death rate is among six-year-olds. So I decided to eat like a six-year-old.” The octogenarian adds, “It’s the safest course I can take.” /201503/362751

A large new study has documented unexpected links in the timing and severity of symptoms of maternal depression, which could help mothers and doctors better anticipate and treat the condition. The study of more than 8,200 women from 19 centers in seven countries, published last month in Lancet Psychiatry, found that in those with the severest symptoms — suicidal thoughts, panic, frequent crying — depression most often began during pregnancy, not after giving birth, as is often assumed. Moderately depressed women often developed their symptoms postpartum, and were more likely than severely depressed women to have experienced complications during pregnancy like pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes or hypertension. Severely depressed women, however, more often reported complications during delivery. “This is the largest study to date on postpartum depressive symptoms,” said Leah Rubin, an assistant professor in the Women’s Mental Health Research Program at University of Illinois at Chicago, a co-author of a commentary about the study. “This is definitely a first step in the right direction, knowing that depression isn’t one-size-fits-all.”“这是迄今为止关于产后抑郁症状的最大型研究,”伊利诺伊大学芝加哥分校女子精神健康研究项目的助理教授利亚·鲁宾(Leah Rubin)说,他曾与人合写了一篇关于这项报告的文章,“知道抑郁症有多种情况,这无疑是通往正确研究方向的第一步。”Ten to 20 percent of mothers experience depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or other symptoms at some point from pregnancy to a year after giving birth. The study could aid efforts to find causes and treatments.10%至20%的产妇在怀至产后一年的某个时候出现过抑郁、焦虑、躁郁或其他症状。 The study participants were all mothers. Some had been found to have postpartum depression by clinicians, while others were assessed via a widely used questionnaire. (Some participants fell into both groups.) Each group could be separated into three subgroups representing women with severe, moderate, and either mild or clinically insignificant depression, said Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody, the director of University of North Carolina’s perinatal psychiatry program and the study’s corresponding author. Dr. Meltzer-Brody said the finding that two-thirds of severe depression began during pregnancy raised scientific questions. The biological factors at work could differ from those affecting women with classic postpartum depression, which scientists think may be linked to plummeting hormone levels after delivery. She also wondered whether the finding that 60 percent of moderately depressed women reported issues like diabetes suggested that immune system problems might underlie their symptoms. Dr. Meltzer-Brody and her colleagues will begin seeking answers this year by collecting DNA from thousands of women through an international online registry. DNA。“Ideally, you could determine who’s at risk,” she said. “What we do now is wait for people to get sick.”“如果一切顺利,我们将能确定哪些人存在风险,”她说,“我们现在在做的事就是等人们生病。” /201503/361987。

A Saudi groom has divorced his bride on their wedding night after seeing her face for the first time when the photographer asked them to pose for pictures. The couple, from the Western Saudi town of Medinah, had agreed to marry each other despite having not met face to face - a popular custom in certain Middle Eastern countries. But when the bride removed her veil and smiled for the camera, her new husband leapt to his feet in disgust. #39;You are not the girl I want to marry,#39; he declared. #39;You are not the one I had imagined. On a mild autumn day about three months ago, the head of China’s main sovereign wealth fund visited an office on Place Vend#244;me in Paris, just across from the Ritz Hotel. Accompanied by his staff — but with no attendant fanfare — Ding Xuedong, chairman of China Investment Corporation, had come to pay his respects to Dominique Senequier. (Dominique Senequier)。The meeting, captured by a photograph now sitting on the marble mantelpiece of Ms Senequier’s 18th-century wood-panelled office, is testament to the international clout of the French private equity fund manager. The 61-year-old executive oversees bn of assets — the largest and most diversified platform of its kind in Europe — after spinning off her employer , Ardian, from French insurer Axa a year ago. The creation of Ardian, previously known as Axa Private Equity, turned out to be one of the greatest challenges in Ms Senequier’s three-decade career in the sector, not least because French politics lurched to the left at a crucial time for the deal. Ms Senequier recalls how drastic tax increases on capital gains and high earners announced by President Fran#231;ois Hollande jeopardised the planned spin-off. For months, the fund manager was unable to estimate its costs. “We didn’t know what measures parliament would pass. Investors willing to back us in the spin-off were not able to predict our cash flows. That was very complicated,” she says. That experience has helped to feed a general frustration with the way her business and industry is treated in France — in spite of all the attention lavished on it by foreign dignitaries. Ms Senequier would even go so far as to say that being a woman in this male-dominated world has been less of a burden than being French. “We get absolutely no support,” she snaps. “France does not really understand what we do. We are one of the biggest in our field, which means something abroad, but not in France. Private equity is not part of the country’s culture.” Unlike the US, home of the world’s biggest buyout firms, such as Blackstone, KKRand Carlyle, France does not have any significant pension funds that are able to provide private equity groups with a local base for growth. In addition, politicians do not fully grasp the role of finance in the economy and have consistently sought to undermine it, she says. Mr Hollande, for instance, identified the world of finance as his “true adversary” during his 2012 campaign. The hostility at home obliges her to do a lot of explaining when raising money from North American pension plans and sovereign wealth funds in Asia and the Middle East. “For about 15 years, our political leaders have launched attacks against finance. When you travel, you have to answer a lot of questions about that,” she says. About 80 per cent of its assets are invested outside France, largely in the US, and its fund of funds team, which invests in buyout funds and is the company’s largest unit, has recently moved to London — not for tax reasons she insists, but to comply with new European legislation. She says she will not relocate her company’s headquarters elsewhere. “France is going through a lot of instability but it is a big, resilient economy,” she says. Ms Senequier was born in Toulon; her father was a marine engineer. One of the first seven women to graduate from Ecole Polytechnique, France’s elite engineering school, she spent five years in the finance ministry as an insurance commissioner, then set up insurer GAN’s private equity arm in 1985. A decade later, she attempted to spin off the unit, securing funding from London-based investment firm Electra Fleming. But her bid was rejected in a highly political process that involved a bailout of GAN by the French state.10年后,她试图将该部门剥离出去,并从伦敦投行Electra Fleming筹得了资金。 Forced to leave, she turned to Claude Bébéar, Axa’s then chief executive and a fellow Polytechnique alumnus. Called the “godfather of French capitalism” for his influence over France’s corporate life, Mr Bébéar offered to help her start Axa’s private equity business, pledging to match half of what she raised from other investors. /201503/362720

Rates价格水平:Basic rooms start at 5. During its bohemian heyday, scores of artists and writers stayed at the Marlton House, built in 1900 and beloved for its prime Greenwich Village location and cheap rates. Jack Kerouac drafted “The Subterraneans” and “Tristessa” there, and when she shot Andy Warhol, the radical feminist writer Valerie Solanas called the Marlton home. Decades later, after the Marlton’s stint as a New School dorm, the hotelier Sean MacPherson and his partners spent at least million transforming it into a “baby grand hotel,” opening last September. Previous ventures include the Bowery, Jane and Maritime hotels. The nine-story Marlton is on Fifth Avenue and West Eighth Street in the heart of Greenwich Village with its many restaurants and charming residential blocks. Washington Square Park is one block south; Fifth Avenue shopping is about a 10-minute walk north. Narrow hallways with Persian runners led to my compact but gorgeous Queen Room, the least expensive option, on the sixth floor. The first of many French details greeted me upon entry: a chicken wire closet door, behind which was a minibar stocked with Champagne, Brooklyn-made Moonshine and Emergen-C, a vitamin boost for any resulting hangover. Brass ing lights flanked a gilded bed frame, whose blue fabric headboard provided a pop of color. Draped across the bed was a faux-fur blanket that I loved for its substantial weight. A black, spidery light fixture dangling from the ceiling added a contemporary twist to the vintage vibe. The cozy room with oak herringbone floors and delicate crown moldings gave me the feeling of being in someone’s brownstone. The black-and-white tile floors and accordion wall mirror had character, but there was no getting around the size. It was perhaps the smallest hotel bathroom I’ve encountered. On the upside: The shower provided great water pressure and there were luxury C#244;té Bastide products. Although the hotel provides complimentary breakfast, it doesn’t offer in-room dining. On a Saturday evening in January, I ventured downstairs to explore the buzzy bar and restaurant Margaux, a 98-seat cafe with a spectacular skylight and floral tiles Mr. MacPherson hand-selected in Argentina. Both spots were packed by 7 p.m. (as they were on a more recent visit), and I hadn’t made a reservation, but the hostess put my group on the top of the list when I said I was a hotel guest. During our brief wait, we sampled house-made cocktails, including the spicy Tijuana Zebra (tequila, grenadine and ginger beer). Service was slow in the restaurant, but the quality of our meal made up for the delay. We tried a vegetarian farmer’s board (avocado hummus, spicy sweet potato and quinoa tabbouleh, ); wild mushroom risotto (); spicy kale salad sprinkled with fresh jalape#241;os (); and a cheeseburger (). The risotto and kale salad were standouts. The next morning, I skipped breakfast at Margaux, grabbing a latte and fresh kale Cheddar scone from the lobby coffee shop and sprawled out in the lounge. Lovely seating areas and a welcoming wood-burning fire; free Wi-Fi. The Marlton is a snug and affordable alternative to larger hotels, and it’s a must for anyone seeking to replicate downtown living. The Marlton Hotel, 5 West Eighth Street, New York City; 212-321-0100;marltonhotel.com.
