Hi, everybody. Yesterday, we learned that our businesses created another 118,000 new jobs in September. That makes 67 straight months of job creation, and 13.2 million new jobs in all. But we would be doing even better if we didnt have to keep dealing with crises in Congress every few months. And especially at a time when the global economy is softening, our own growth could slow if Congress doesnt do away with harmful austerity measures. Now, on Wednesday, more than half of Republicans in Congress voted to shut down the government for the second time in two years. Fortunately, there were enough votes in both parties to pass a last-minute bill to keep the government open for another ten weeks. Unfortunately, that gimmick only sets up another shutdown threat two weeks before Christmas. Look, thats not the way America should operate. It just kicks the can down the road without solving any problems or doing any long-term planning for the future. And thats why I will not sign another shortsighted, short-term spending bill like the one Congress sent me this week. Heres why. A few years ago, both parties agreed to put in place harmful, automatic cuts that make no distinction between spending we dont need and spending we do. Those cuts have actually kept our economy from growing faster. Even worse, theyre actually undermining the middle class. Heres one example. If we dont undo these mindless cuts, then next year, well be funding our kids education at the same levels per pupil we did in the year 2000. Compared to my budget, that would be like cutting federal funding for 4,500 schools, 17,500 teachers and aides, 1.9 million students. Thats not good for our kids or our economy. Its a prescription for American decline. And it shouldnt happen. We should invest in things like education today, or well pay the price tomorrow. But Congress should do its job, stop kicking the can down the road, and pass a serious budget rather than flirt with another shutdown. A serious budget is one that keeps America strong through our military, our law enforcement; that keeps America generous through caring for our veterans and our seniors; that keeps America competitive by educating our kids and our workers. Thats what I want to work with serious people in both parties to achieve. Because thats how well build on the progress of 13 million new jobs, and help the middle class get ahead. Thanks, everybody, and have a great weekend.201510/402742。

  • The tailings ponds are the largest toxic impoundments on the planet. Oil sands-r rather I should say tar sands-oil sands is a P.R.-created term,油砂-或者我该称它为沥青砂-油砂是公关部门创造的词汇,so that the oil companies wouldnt be trying to promote something that sounds like a sticky tar-like substance thats the worlds dirtiest oil. So they decided to call it oil sands. The tar sands consume more water than any other oil process,沥青砂的生产过程比其他油类消耗更多水,three to five barrels of water are taken, polluted and then returned into tailings ponds,生产一桶原油 需使用三至五桶水,受污染的水进入残渣池,the largest toxic impoundments on the planet. SemCrude, just one of the licensees, SemCrude in just one of their tailings ponds,只是其中一家取得执照的公司,在他们拥有的其中一个残渣池中,dumps 250,000 tons of this toxic gunk every single day. Thats creating the largest toxic impoundments in the history of the planet. So far, this is enough toxin to cover the face of Lake Eerie a foot deep. And the tailings ponds range in size up to 9,000 acres. Thats two-thirds the size of the entire island of Manhattan. Thats like from Wall Street at the southern edge of Manhattan up to maybe 120th Street. So this is an absolutely-this is one of the larger tailings ponds. This might be, what? I dont know, half the size of Manhattan. And you can see in the context,你可由之前的叙述得知,its just a relatively small section of one of 10 mining complexes and another 40 to 50 on stream to be approved soon. And of course, these tailings ponds-well, you cant see many ponds from outer space and you can see these, so maybe we should stop calling them ponds,当然,这些残渣池-确实,你无法从外太空看见许多残渣池,但你可以看见这些因此或许我们不该称它为池,these massive toxic wastelands are built unlined and on the banks of the Athabasca River.
  • Hi, everybody. Sunday is International Womens Day-a day to celebrate remarkable women and girls worldwide, and to re-dedicate ourselves to defending the fundamental rights and dignity of all people. Thats why, this week, Michelle and I launched a new initiative on a topic thats close to both our hearts: girls education. Its called “Let Girls Learn.” And its goal is to help more girls around the world go to school and stay in school. Right now, 62 million girls who should be in school, are not. And thats not an accident. Its the direct result of barriers, large and small, that stand in the way of girls who want to learn. Maybe their families cant afford the school fees. Maybe the risk of being hurt or kidnapped or even killed by men who will do anything to stop girls from learning is just too great. Or maybe they arent in school because theyre expected to get married and become mothers while theyre still teenagers-or even earlier. In too many parts of the world, girls are still valued more for their bodies than for their minds. Thats just plain wrong. And we all have to do more to stop it. Thats the idea behind “Let Girls Learn.” Were making it clear to any country thats our partner-or that wants to be our partner-that they need to get serious about increasing the number of girls in school. Our diplomats and development experts are aly hard at work. Our Peace Corps volunteers will play a big role, too. And were putting our partnerships with NGOs, businesses and foundations to work on behalf of girls everywhere. I come to this issue as the leader of the worlds largest economy, and Commander-in-Chief of the worlds most powerful military, and Im convinced that a world in which girls are educated is a safer, more stable, more prosperous place. When girls are educated, their future children are healthier and better nourished. Their future wages increase, which in turn strengthens their families security. National growth gets a boost, too. And places where women and girls are treated as full and equal citizens tend to be more stable and more democratic. But I also come to this issue as the father of two wonderful young women. And I know that there are lots of girls just like Malia and Sasha out there-girls who are funny and caring and inquisitive and strong, and have so much to offer the world. Its a privilege to be the parent of girls. And we want to make sure that no girl out there is denied her chance to learn-that no girl is prevented from making her unique contributions to the world. Because every girl-every girl-deserves our respect. And every girl deserves an education. Thanks, and have a great weekend. 201503/363322。
  • And you actually start this game in a drop of water,其实是从一滴水里开始这个游戏的,as a very, very small single-cell creature,这时你还是一个很小很小的单细胞生物,and right off the bat you basically just have to live, survive, reproduce. So here we are, at a very microscopic scale, swimming around. And I actually realize that cells dont have eyes,我知道事实上细胞生物没有眼睛,but it helps to make it cute. The players are going to play through every generation of this species,玩家会逐步经历这个物种的每一代进化,and as you play the game the creature is actually growing bit by bit. And as we start growing the camera will actually start zooming out,当它开始生长的时候,镜头会变焦and things that you see in the background there will actually start slowly pulling into the foreground,使得你在背景中看到的景物会慢慢地往前移,showing you a little bit of what youll be interacting with as you grow. So as we eat, the camera starts pulling out,瞧,当它进食的时候,镜头会拉远,and then we start interacting with kind of larger and larger organisms. Now, we actually play through many generations here, at the cellular scale. Im going to skip ahead here. At some point we get larger, and we actually get to a macro-evolution scale. Now at this point were leaving the water,在这个界面中,我们离开了水,and one thing thats kind of important about this game is that, at every level,这个游戏中很重要的一点是,在每一个级别中,the player is designing their creature, and thats a fundamental aspect of this. Now, in the evolution game here,那么,在这个进化游戏中,the creature scale, basically you have to eat, survive, and then reproduce. You know, very Darwinian. One thing we noticed with ;The Sims,;大家在我以前创作的“模拟”系列游戏中which is a game I did earlier, is that players love making stuff. When they were able to make stuff in the game当他们自己可以制作东西时,they had a tremendous amount of empathy in connection to it. Even if it wasnt as pretty as what other people would make it哪怕做出来的东西并不是人们想象的那么美丽as a professional artist would make for games就像专业的艺术家为游戏设计的那样it really stuck with them and they really cared about what would happen to it. So at this point, weve left the water, and now with this little creature --所以现在,我们离开了水。我们可以让这个小家伙——we could bring up the volume a little bit -- and now we might try to eat. We might sneak up on this little guy over here maybe, and try and eat him. OK, well, we fight. OK, we got him. Now we get a meal. So really, at this part of the game,所以在游戏的这个部分,what were doing is were running around and surviving,我们就是在游荡和生存,and also getting to the next generation,并且制造下一代,because were going to play through every generation of this creature. We can mate, so Im going to see if one of these creatures wants to mate with me. Yeah. We didnt want to replay actual evolution with humans and all that嗯。我们并不想重复人类实际的进化过程,because its almost more interesting to look at alternate possibilities in evolution. Evolution is usually presented as this one path that we took through,我们经历的进化过程有时候显得像是唯一的方式but really it represents this huge set of possibilities.
  • Hi, everybody. On Tuesday, I gave my final State of the Union Address. And a focus was this: how do we make the new economy work better for everyone, not just those at the top? After the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes, were in the midst of the longest streak of private-sector job growth in our history. More than 14 million new jobs. An unemployment rate cut in half. At the same time, our economy continues to go through profound changes that began long before the Great Recession hit. Its changed to the point where even when folks have jobs; even when the economy is growing; its harder for hardworking families to pull themselves out of poverty, harder for young people to start out on their careers, and tougher for workers to retire when they want to. Thats a big part of the reason a lot of working families are feeling anxious. And it offends our fundamentally American belief that everybody who works hard should be able to get ahead. Thats why weve been fighting so hard to give families more opportunity and more security-by working to create more good jobs, invest in our middle class, and help working people get a raise. Its what the Affordable Care Act is all about-filling in the gaps in employer-based care so that when somebody loses a job, or goes back to school, or starts that new business, they still have health care. And its why I believe weve got to take steps to modernize our unemployment insurance system. If a hardworking American loses her job, regardless of what state she lives in, we should make sure she can get unemployment insurance and some help to retrain for her next job. If shes been unemployed for a while, we should reach out to her and connect her with career counseling. And if she finds a new job that doesnt pay as much as her old one, we should offer some wage insurance that helps her pay her bills. Under my plan, experienced workers who now make less than ,000 could replace half of their lost wages-up to ,000 over two years. Its a way to give families some stability and encourage folks to rejoin the workforce-because we shouldnt just be talking about unemployment; we should be talking about re-employment. Thats when America works best-when everyone has opportunity; when everyone has some security; and when everyone can contribute to this country we love. Thats how we make sure that hardworking families can get ahead. And thats what Ill be fighting for with every last day of my presidency. Thanks everybody. Have a great weekend.
