I went to a public high school on Long Island. Syosset high school. Ooh, Hello Syosset. The girls I went to school with had Prada bag and flat-ironed hair and they spoke with an accent, I who had moved here at age 9 from Connecticut mimicked to fit in. Florida oranges. Chocolate Cherries. Since Im ancient and the Internet was just starting when I was in high school. People didnt really pay that much attention to the fact that I was an actress. I was known mainly in school for having a backpack bigger than I was and always having white-out on my hands, because I hated seeing anything crossed out in my notebooks. I was voted for my senior yearbook most likely to be a contestant on Jeopardy or code for nerdiest. When I got to Harvard just after the release of Star Wars Episode one. I knew I would be starting over in terms of how people viewed me. I feared people would assume I gotten in just for being famous, and that they will think that I was not worthy of the intellectual rigor here. And it would not have been far from the truth. When I came here I never written a 10-page paper before. Im not even sure Id written a 5-page paper. I was alarmed and intimidated by the calm eyes of fellow students, who came here from Dalton or Exeter who thought that compared to high school the workload here was easy. I was completely overwhelmed and thought that ing a thousand pages a week with unimaginable. That writing a fifty-page thesis is just something I could never do. I had no ideas how to declare my intentions. I couldnt even articulate them to myself. Ive been acting since I was 11, but I thought acting was too frivolous and certainly not meaningful. I came from a family of academics and was very concerned of being taken seriously. In contrast to my inability to declare myself, on my first day of orientation freshman year, five separate students introduce themselves to me by saying Im going to be President. Remember I told you that. Their names, for the record, were Bernie Sanders, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz , Barack Obama, and Hilary Clinton. So in the oasis of intelligentsia that is TED,I stand here before you this evening as an expert in dragging heavy stuff around cold places. Ive been leading polar expeditions for most of my adult life, and last month, my teammate Tarka LHerpiniere and I finished the most ambitious expedition Ive ever attempted. In fact, it feels like Ive been transported straight here from four months in the middle of nowhere, mostly grunting and swearing, straight to the TED stage. So you can imagine thats a transition that hasnt been entirely seamless. One of the interesting side effects seems to be that my short-term memory is entirely shot. So Ive had to write some notes to avoid too much grunting and swearing in the next 17 minutes. This is the first talk Ive given about this expedition, and while we werent sequencing genomes or building space telescopes,这是我第一次谈论这次探险,虽然我们没有做出基因测序, 或是建太空望远镜这样的贡献,this is a story about giving everything we had to achieve something that hadnt been done before. So I hope in that you might find some food for thought. It was a journey, an expedition in Antarctica, the coldest, windiest, driest and highest altitude continent on Earth. Its a fascinating place. Its a huge place. Its twice the size of Australia,a continent that is the same size as China and India put together. As an aside, I have experienced an interesting phenomenon in the last few days,说句题外话,前些天我遇上了个有趣现象,something that I expect Chris Hadfield may get at TED in a few years time, conversations that go something like this: 宇航员克里斯? Awesome. My husband and I did Antarctica with Lindblad for our anniversary. Or, Oh cool, did you go there for the marathon? Our journey was, in fact, 69 marathons back to back in 105 days, an 1,800-mile round trip on foot from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again. In the process, we broke the record for the longest human-powered polar journey in history by more than 400 miles. For those of you from the Bay Area,it was the same as walking from here to San Francisco, then turning around and walking back again. So as camping trips go, it was a long one,and one Ive seen summarized most succinctly here on the hallowed pages of Business Insider Malaysia. Chris Hadfield talked so eloquently about fear and about the odds of success, and indeed the odds of survival. Of the nine people in history that had attempted this journey before us,none had made it to the pole and back, and five had died in the process. This is Captain Robert Falcon Scott. He led the last team to attempt this expedition. Scott and his rival Sir Ernest Shackleton, over the space of a decade, both led expeditions battling to become the first to reach the South Pole,to chart and map the interior of Antarctica, a place we knew less about, at the time, than the surface of the moon, because we could see the moon through telescopes. Antarctica was, for the most part, a century ago, uncharted. Some of you may know the story. Scotts last expedition, the Terra Nova Expedition in 1910,started as a giant siege-style approach.1910年, 斯科特对新大陆作了他最后一次探险,带着胸中的万丈豪情。He had a big team using ponies, using dogs, using petrol-driven tractors, dropping multiple, pre-positioned depots of food and fuel through which Scotts final team of five would travel to the Pole, where they would turn around and ski back to the coast again on foot. 201503/365841What is true and the reason that a lot of Americans feel anxious is that the economy has been changing in profound ways, changes that started long before the Great Recession hit and changes that have not let up. Today, technology doesnt just replace jobs on the assembly line, but any job where work can be automated. Companies in a global economy can locate anywhere, and face tougher competition. As a result, workers have less leverage for a raise. Companies have less loyalty to their communities. And more and more wealth and income is concentrated at the very top. All these trends have squeezed workers, even when they have jobs; even when the economy is growing. Its made it harder for a hardworking family to pull itself out of poverty, harder for young people to start on their careers, and tougher for workers to retire when they want to. And although none of these trends are unique to America, they do offend our uniquely American belief that everybody who works hard should get a fair shot. For the past seven years, our goal has been a growing economy that also works better for everybody. Weve made progress. But we need to make more. And despite all the political arguments weve had these past few years, there are some areas where Americans broadly agree. We agree that real opportunity requires every American to get the education and training they need to land a good-paying job.

After the collapse of the Soviet entire the ed States emerged as the sole superpower. No other power, or the combination of powers, could challenge its supremacy. But the unipolar world did not take root. When President Bush sought to assert Americas supremacy by invading Iraq on false pretences he achieved the exact opposite of what he intended. The ed States suffered a precipitous decline in its power and influence. So the disarray in the international financial system is matched by instability in international relations. The new order that will eventually emerge will not be dominated by the ed States to the same extent as the old one. To understand what is happening we need a different conceptual framework from the one to which we have been accustomed. The efficient market hypothesis looks at financial markets in isolation and totally disregards politics. But that gives a distorted picture. As I have pointed out several times, behind the invisible hand of markets there is the visible hand of politics which establishes the rules and conditions in which the market mechanism operates. My conceptual framework relates to the political economy, not the market economy as an abstract construct that is governed by timelessly valid laws. I look at financial markets as a branch of history.
