Last week I chaired a Financial Times conference in London, flew to S#227;o Paulo and did the same there. Our subject in both was the “millennial generation”, those aged between 18 and 30. I am not in this age bracket, but the conferences prompted the question: if I were starting my career now, would I prefer to do it in the UK capital or Latin America’s most powerful city? For ease on the eye, you would surely choose London. S#227;o Paulo has some greenery, but nothing to compare with London’s parks. While some of London’s suburbs have a brick-and-slate dreariness, S#227;o Paulo’s vast stretch of high rises surely appeals only to the most ardent architectural modernists. Road journeys in both cities are unpredictable. I was told to leave at least an hour for a five-mile taxi ride in S#227;o Paulo. It took 11 minutes, but that was at 7am. One of our mid-morning conference speakers found himself snarled. The clatter of helicopters, both morning and evening in S#227;o Paulo (at one point I counted eight immediately overhead), suggests many of the wealthy prefer not to leave these trips to chance. London is safer. My S#227;o Paulo hotel receptionist told me to remove my watch before I went out, unless it was a cheap piece of plastic. (I rolled up my sleeves to show would-be assailants that I don’t own any sort of watch.) The statistics say such caution is justified. London had 1.6 murders per 100,000 people in 2009, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. S#227;o Paulo had 10.8 – although the homicide rate in both cities has almost halved since 2003. In cultural offerings, London’s advantage is overwhelming, but it has had centuries longer to accumulate its riches. Greater S#227;o Paulo has a population of 19m. As Larry Rohter, the veteran New York Times correspondent, points out in his book Brazil on the Rise, in 1870 its population was 31,000. There is some exciting new Brazilian art and the S#227;o Paulo Museum of Art has a fine collection. The weather: no contest. It was warmer and sunnier last week at the start of S#227;o Paulo’s winter than during London’s fitful summer. What is it like to be young and ambitious in the two cities? Both conferences heard from entrepreneurs and community activists, as well as from policy specialists. The young Brazilians were notably more downbeat than their London counterparts. Bia Granja, co-creator of youPIX, “the largest internet culture festival in Brazil”, complained about the lack of tolerance in the country, saying: “I’ve never seen so much prejudice in my life.” This pointed to a startling difference between the two conferences: in spite of S#227;o Paulo’s rich racial mix, every speaker and almost every conference delegate was white. The same is true in the city’s upmarket neighbourhoods and restaurants. This is not to oversell the UK capital’s tolerance: shortly after our conference there, an Islamic centre was burnt down in the wake of a soldier being hacked to death in the city’s streets. But the London panels and the delegates were more varied and optimistic. They were more mobile too, including Bobby Kensah, a UK-trained lawyer with an award for his pro bono work, who now lives in Hong Kong, and Rokhaya Diallo, a French anti-racism campaigner who popped over for the day. Ms Diallo was worried about how her English would hold up. It was fine. The S#227;o Paulo conference began in English, but most of the Brazilian speakers switched to Portuguese. There is nothing wrong with this: why shouldn’t they speak their own language in their own country? The few foreigners present had simultaneous translation headsets. The problem is that Portuguese is, as one of the Brazilian panellists said, spoken “only in Macau and some places in Africa” (she seemed to disregard Portugal). It is striking how few people in S#227;o Paulo, even in luxury hotels and shops, speak any other language, and how few foreign publications are on its newsstands. Even though Brazil’s growth has slowed, its rich natural and agricultural resources suggest it has brighter prospects than the UK. In manufacturing, Brazil, unlike Britain, makes complete civil aircraft. That is perhaps why its citizens feel less need to look further afield. S#227;o Paulo talks about Brazil. London talks about the world. /201306/244953

When you look back on yourself in the past – 10, 20, 30 or more years ago – it’s surprising to see how much you have changed over time. Your experiences, your friends, your family and your work have all shaped who you are right now. But where will you be in another few years? How will you have changed? Reflective writing in your journal is an excellent way to think about what you want out of the future. You may have aly written a letter to your younger self before, conveying all the wisdom and perspective you wish you had had at the time. Now consider the opposite end of the spectrum; what would you say if you wrote your future self a letter? Just imagine writing a letter to your future self 5 years from now, then opening it at that exact moment 5 years down the road to see how much of it resonated with you. It is a useful supplementary tool to be used in goal achievement, because when you write the letter to your future self, it helps crystallize exactly how you anticipate yourself to become at that specific moment down the road. As you the letter in the future, you can assess how many things match up (or not) vs. your expectations in the past and think about why that’s the case. Often times, the goals we set and our goal achievement process are subjected to a lot of changes along the way, due to varying obstacles, unanticipated circumstances and changing priorities. The letter gives you a macro-view of your initial vision and lets you recognize how your current vision differs from the past. When you open the letter in the future, you as your future self gets to compare how you used to be in the past and compare with how you are currently. This lets you see in totality how much things have changed since then – and this can be a really intriguing experience. It’s interesting to just see how much you have grown/changed since you wrote the letter. What To Write About写什么内容好呢?Look at today’s date. Now imagine you writing to yourself, exactly X years from now. What do you want to say to your future self? How do you want your future self to be like 1 year in the future? What are the different dreams and goals you would want to be realized by then? What is your desired status of the areas of your life wheel at that time? Career/Business/Studies? Finances? Family? Friends? Love? Health? Spirituality? Recreation? Personal growth? Contribution? 成就?Once you’re done, sign off your name with today’s date. Safe keep your letter. Put the papers in an envelope. Seal it. Set in your calendar to open your letter 1 year from now. Put this envelope in a safe place where no one can access to it. Live your life like you’ve never lived it before in the next 1 year. Open the letter 1 year later and relish in nostalgia, love and joy as you the letter from yourself 1 year ago. Write Your Letter To Your Future Self给未来的自己写封信Take out a pen and paper right now and start writing your letter to your future self. Identify a time period to write to, imagine how you will be like during that time period, then start writing. Think about the type of person you will be, your place in life, what you would have accomplished then, the kind of thoughts and feelings you will experience, and so on. At the end of the letter, seal it in an envelope, write the date to open it on the cover and put it in a safe storage space. Fix the date to open this letter in your personal calendar. When you open this sometime in the near future, you might gain additional insights about yourself and your journey in the past few years that you were oblivious to. /201301/219425。

A SENIOR Coca-Cola China executive said yesterday that the company has filed a police report about a recent claim that its orange juice contains illegal fungicide and it will hold the perpetrators legally responsible. ;We take the move not only to safeguard the reputation of our brand, but also to help create a fair and healthy business environment, an environment where virtue is rewarded and vice punished,; said Bai Changbo, vice president of Coca-Cola#39;s China operation.“我们采取此举不仅是捍卫我们品牌的声誉,同时也是为了惩恶扬善,创建一个公平健康的营商环境,”可口可乐大中华区副总裁白长波表示。In recent days, reports have circulated on the Internet saying that Coca-Cola China admitted in a TV program that its orange juice products contained a fungicide called carbendazim. The reports said the TV program was ;Topics in Focus,; one of the most-watched shows on China Central Television. The reports supposedly warned customers not to drink Coca-Cola orange juice products. However, Coca-Cola said the reports were untrue and ;Topics in Focus; had never made such a program. Coca-Cola said the rumor stemmed from an issue with Brazilian orange products a year ago, but that the truth had been distorted. At that time, the company discovered that carbendazim, which is not approved for use on citrus fruits in the ed States, was being used to combat mold on orange trees in Brazil. Coca-Cola headquarters immediately alerted the US Food and Drug Administration as it believed it was an industrial issue that affected every company producing products in the US using orange juice from Brazil. After a risk assessment, the FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency said orange juice from Brazil was safe to drink. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola China sent samples of orange juice imported from Brazil to China#39;s National Food Quality Supervision and Inspection Center. A report released early last year by the center said the amount of carbendazim in the samples submitted by Coca-Cola ;can not be measurable.;与此同时,可口可乐中国公司立即将所使用的巴西橙汁原料送到中国国家食品质量监督检验中心。 /201301/219666

Most of us are approaching the end of the year with reflections on the past 12 months, along with resolutions and hopes for the future.2012到了年尾,对于我们每一个人来说,是时候对过去一年作下反思,定好新一年的目标和希望。In years past, we may have chalked that future up to genetics and a dose of good luck. But research now suggests we have much more of a hand in our destiny than previously believed. In fact, a number of straight-forward nutrition, fitness, sleep and other health tips can help assure you maximize the life in your years. Here are six of those things that we learned in 2012. 1. An advanced age is no excuse to give up on healthy habits!1. A 2012 study showed that exercise, eating right and avoiding harmful habits like smoking helped people 5.4 years longer than their less healthy-intentioned peers.2012年的一项研究显示,锻炼、健康饮食以及避免有害的生活比如抽烟,坚持健康生活的人比他们的同龄人寿命平均长5.4年。2. Exercise Really Works2. There#39;s nothing new about the fact that exercise helps us live longer. But a recent study did take a closer look at just how powerful regular activity really is: The physically active benefit from several years added to their lives. The study found that for every additional hour of exercise (like jogging or swimming) that a black woman gets, she can gain 11 hours of lifespan. 3. Laugh More3. 多笑As part of an ongoing study on genes and aging, researchers found this year that certain personality traits seem to be associated with a longer life, including the propensity to laugh -- a lot! 4. Look At The Bright Side4. In the same study on aging, optimism was also linked to living longer. The 243 subjects over the age of 95 ;were outgoing, optimistic and easygoing. They considered laughter an important part of life and had a large social network. They expressed emotions openly rather than bottling them up,; study researcher Dr. Nir Barzilai, M.D., director of Einstein#39;s Institute for Aging Research, said in a statement. 5. Supplements Can Help5. Adults in their 60s and 70s were 9 percent less likely to die over a three-year period when they took vitamin D supplements with calcium, compared to the elderly who went without either supplement. A number of other foods and nutrients have also been linked to a longer lifespan, including omega-3s and certain antioxidants. 6. We Know What To Do -- But We Rarely Do It All6. The most important behaviors for a long and healthy life aren#39;t secrets -- they#39;re things like not smoking, exercising, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels in check. In fact, you may even be tired of hearing about them. But just a little more than 1 percent of American adults actually abide by these guidelines, according to a 2012 study. People who do meet all the criteria? Well, they enjoy a 51 percent decreased risk of death from any cause.

Reset generation refer to young people who, when a situation becomes difficult or burdensome, quit and start over again in a different situation. This phrase was inspired by the ;reset; feature that comes with most or computer games. Choosing this feature gives the player a fresh start and is most often employed when the player gets into a mess from which he or she can#39;t or won#39;t escape. The word ;reset; means that these young people simply choose to ;reset; their ;play; buttons by changing jobs, partners or friends, instead of trying to cope with and learn from their difficulties — a standard pattern for older generations. /201211/207137
