Business Nokias new phones Not drowning, but waving商业 诺记新机 悬崖边的挣扎The struggling phonemaker shows off its first Windows handsets深陷泥潭的诺基亚展示自己的第一款微软win7系统的手机.EIGHT months ago Stephen Elop, Nokias newish chief executive, told the Finnish phonemakers staff that they were ;standing on a burning platform; and had no choice but to jump into the ;icy waters; below.8个月前,斯蒂芬埃洛普,这位新晋诺基亚的首席执行官,向这个芬兰手机制造巨头的员工发表了讲话,说;我们正处于一个燃烧的平台之中,别无选择之下,只能跳入下方冰冷的海水中;。His plan for fishing the company out of the freezing briny rests largely on making smartphones that use Microsofts Windows operating system—and getting them to market quickly. On October 26th Mr Elop unveiled the first of these devices. On a live feed from Salo, in Finland, a proud employee packed a Lumia 800 into its box. It is due to go on sale in six European countries next month. It will have a cheaper sibling, the Lumia 710. Lumia 710.By recent standards, this is fast work. Nokia had been slow to cotton on to the popularity of touch screens. Its own operating system, Symbian, which was not designed for touch, looked clunky. While Nokia dithered, consumers lapped up Apples iPhone and the many smartphones based on Googles Android operating system. All this cost Mr Elops predecessor, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, his job in September 2010. Having plumped for Windows over Symbian and MeeGo, a system Nokia had worked on with Intel, a huge semiconductor-maker,在下定决心选择了微软的系统而非塞班亦或是和半导体制造商英特尔合作开发的Meego系统之后,Mr Elop has had to move quickly. Even fewer people want Symbian, though Nokia updates and supports it: Nokias smartphone sales fell by 39% in the year to the third quarter, when the firm made its second quarterly operating loss in a row. 39%。Pricing is another sign of urgency. The Lumia 710 will be the cheapest Windows smartphone available. It may be the first to be offered free to low-tariff customers after operators subsidies, says Francisco Jeronimo of IDC, a research firm.IDC研究公司的Francisco Jeronimo说道:;定价(的高低)也从另一个方面显示了形势的紧迫性。 The new phones have more going for them than price and cool Nordic design. Operators will surely be glad of an alternative to Apple and Android. Microsofts software is a more reliable bet than Nokias own.;相比于其出众的硬件配备,诺基亚所提供的软件实在是太过糟糕;。;Theyve had great hardware but the software was a disaster,; says Ben Wood of CCS Insight, another research group.;有了这两款手机,诺基亚提供的软件务将非常可靠;。;With this product, they know the softwares going to be rock solid.;CCS Insight 研究公司的Ben Wood 如是说。The phones contain applications to distinguish them from rivals,这两部新机里的内置应用使人们将它与其竞争对手区别开来,such as a navigation system for drivers that uses Nokias maps, by common consent the best in the trade, public-transport information for 450 cities in 44 countries, and streamed free music. Carolina Milanesi of Gartner, another research outfit, expects further differentiation once a new version of Windows appears, probably next year. That said, Nokia must still work to keep its chin above the waves. Microsoft, though a titan in personal-computer software, is a homunculus in mobile devices. Nokias market share in America, where new smartphones are due to go on sale next year, has all but vanished. Operators there may prefer Windows phones under more popular brands. And Windows ;tiles; require more explaining to the novice than the icons on an iPhone or Android phone. Hence Nokias plan to put lots of ;seeding; devices into retailers hands. Nokia is still the biggest seller of less sophisticated ;feature; phones and shifted 25% more of them in the third quarter than the second. 25%。This week it presented four new models,并在本周推出了四款新机型,aimed chiefly at aspiring, fun-loving youngsters in emerging markets—though they will be sold everywhere but America and Canada. Mr Elop thinks these products are ;blurring the line; between smartphones and feature phones: they even come with ;Angry Birds;, an online game to which many smartphone users have become hopelessly addicted, made by Rovio, another Finnish company. Mr Elop does not need people to crave Nokias new phones. Merely to buy them. Books and Arts; Book Review;American agribusiness; The power in the union;文艺;书评;美国农业;工会的力量;Trampling Out the Vintage: César Chávez and the Two Souls of the ed Farm Workers. By Frank Bardacke. “He is trampling out the vintage” is part of a line from “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. It continues “where the grapes of wrath are stored”. Thus the title of Frank Bardackes history deliberately echoes John Steinbecks novel, a proletarian classic which tells the story of tenant farmers driven off their fields in Oklahoma and forced to cross the country to seek work in California.“他踏在......” But, as Mr Bardacke stresses, a huge demographic difference divides then from now. In the Depression of the 1930s Steinbeck could present his impoverished “Okies” as deserving of government help “because they were true American whites”. It was harder for their Mexican-American successors to win public sympathy. They were brown, Spanish-speaking and “considered aliens and sojourners”. It took the genius of César Chávez, whose family was dispossessed of its land during his boyhood, to bring them into the American mainstream. As a vegan inspired by Catholic social teaching and the non-violent methods of Mohandas Gandhi, Chávez was more comfortable with religious people than political ones. He set out to create a movement rather than a union, leading a “pilgrimage” across the Central Valley of California to the state capital, Sacramento, in 1966. When his followers were blocked by the police they knelt in prayer behind a picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The idealism of Chávezs movement and the fasts he endured to win support for striking farmworkers caught the public imagination. Other labour leaders looked on aghast as he built an odd but strong coalition of farmworkers, religious enthusiasts, student radicals, politicians, artists and union officials. Working together they persuaded consumers in their millions to boycott the grapes, lettuces and other products of agribusinesses which refused to negotiate sincerely with the ed Farm Workers (UFW). The tactic they perfected was described by critics as “victimhood”. A photograph of a starving urchin was, for instance, captioned: “Every grape you buy helps keep this child hungry”. Mr Bardacke is only half-impressed with all this. As he sees it Chávez had two main responsibilities: to sustain support for boycotts, “which he did magnificently”, and to administer the union, “which he did badly”. The author notes that the unions membership continued to decline in the late 1980s even after Chávez fasted for 36 days to support its grape boycott and anti-pesticide campaign. His verdict seems unduly harsh but then Mr Bardacke is an old-fashioned leftist. For him, strikebreakers are almost always “scabs” and growers not even worth listening to. This is a pity, for such prejudices mar an otherwise intelligent, thorough history. The UFW is indeed, as he contends, a shadow of its former self, but the odds against it ever succeeding as a conventional labour union were always impossibly large. Illegal migrants from Mexico, poor and desperate for work, poured across the border to take the jobs of UFW members and doom their strikes. The rival Teamsters union was no help. Its operatives sabotaged UFW recruitment drives by telling farmworkers they would be much better off in a tough professional union like theirs. Nonetheless Chávez left a significant legacy which is insufficiently acknowledged by Mr Bardacke. In leading by example and through the sheer force of his will he raised the stature of Mexican-Americans not just in California and the south-west but throughout the ed States. In consequence, he is now held in the same high esteem as his black equivalent, Martin Luther King. César Chávezs portrait hangs in the National Gallery in Washington, DC. His statue stands on university campuses. Streets, parks and buildings are named after him. In California his birthday, March 31st, is a state holiday. His truth is marching on. /201303/232686Dementia is a scary word. So is senile. Both words conjure up images of being helpless in old age, of losing your memories. Of losing yourself. And the worst thing about losing your mind is that once its gone, its gone. Youre never the same. Except when thats not the case. In recent years, doctors and scientists have seen more and more cases where memory loss isnt just a natural consequence of aging. Sometimes its caused by other things, like medication. The wrong combination of medicine can cause confusion and forgetfulness. So can doses that are too high or too low. And stress is also a factor. Being stressed out can shrink the hippocampus--a part of the brain that helps form and hold onto memories. So how do you know if an elderly parent is suffering from dementia, or if its a problem with meds or stress? First, find out what medication theyre taking and learn about possible side effects. And try to find out whats going on in their lives that might be stressful. And, of course, talk with their doctor to see about trying a new medication or changing doses. Because the good news is that if medicine or stress is to blame for memory problems, making a change could solve the problem and help your parent be themselves again.
