At the same time, I would like to send a message of reconciliation between Japan and the U.S.;安倍表示:“我们绝对不能重复战争悲剧,我愿意做出这个承诺。 The White House confirmed a meeting in Hawaii on Dec. 27, saying ;the two leaders visit will showcase the power of reconciliation that has turned former adversaries into the closest of allies, united by common interests and shared values.;白宫方面随后实了将27日于夏威夷进行访问的消息,并宣称:“两位领导人的此次会面将展示和解的力量,它能将以前的对手变成最亲密的盟友,我们会因共同的利益和相同的价值观团而结在一起。”During his visit to Hawaii on Dec 26 and Dec 27, Abe will offer flowers at the memorial in Pearl Harbor and also hold talks with US President Barack Obama. Observers said Abes decision to visit Pearl Harbor aims to consolidate the Japan-US alliance.

Now everyone will love her again. Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post, in his postmortem on the election, wrote that although as a candidate Hillary Clinton was never able to show that she was something more than the hyper-prepared, supersmart, best student in the class, she managed to show more of herself in her concession speech Wednesday morning, the latest example of politicians doing their best when they’ve lost something they wanted so badly.《华盛顿邮报Washington Post)的克里斯. Nonsense. Mrs Clinton made the same case for a united America, an inclusive, big-hearted America in her concession speech that she made in the last debate and in plenty of campaign speeches. The change was in the listener, not the speaker. Once she was properly humbled, her grace, grit and authenticity could be recognised. For millions of American women, and plenty of men, she was always striving for something beyond herself, a stronger, more united, equal and caring America. She made this point at the 2008 Democratic Convention, when she talked about the people who had motivated her to run. She said to her supporters: I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me?#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;Or were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible? The context is all. As long as Mrs Clinton was seeking to be president, she was, to so many, a striving, ambitious, cold and calculating woman. That stereotype is all too familiar to women who want to hold the same positions that men do. But once she held a job, whether senator or secretary of state, she was widely admired by many of the same people who had disliked her as a candidate. Both Democrats and Republicans would tell me that they had opposed her in the 2008 campaign but were so impressed with the job she was doing. Beyond sexism, however, Mrs Clinton lost this election above all because of a sweeping and intense desire for change the same hunger that elected Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. Nate Silver predicted before the election that if Donald Trump won, it would be because of white American men without a college degree who had voted for Mr Obama over John McCain or Mitt Romney but would now vote Trump. And so it proved. More than 80 per cent of voters, who prioritised can bring needed change, chose Mr Trump, even when they thought he did not have the temperament to be president. The question, for Republicans and Democrats alike, is how to accomplish that change. How to rebuild a crumbling country and redress the decades-long slide in the standard of living and quality of life for middle-class Americans? How to create an economy that provides opportunity for white men in post-industrial America as well as for African Americans, Latinos and other minorities? A few weeks ago, at the annual dinner for the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think-tank, its president Arthur Brooks spoke of the need to return to core values as the starting point for finding opportunity in the crisis gripping America. Core values include the equality of human dignity, and the right of each person to realise his or her potential. He was repeating, perhaps unwittingly, one of Mrs Clinton’s mantras: the desire for a nation and a world where everyone can live up to his or her God-given potential. Mr Trump took up this refrain in his victory speech, adding one of his signature phrases: It’s going to be a beautiful thing. Every single American will have the opportunity to realise his or her fullest potential. Equal opportunity is a staple of the American political diet. But focusing on individual potential could point to a populism without demagoguery, a people-centred politics that measures success in terms of the numbers who have access to good jobs, schools and life opportunities rather than of the size of government, the level of taxes or the amount of regulation. The American political system is #172;broken. It does not deliver the results that a majority of Americans want, in poll after poll, on issues from gun safety to wages to fiscal responsibility. The only way forward is to harness the desire for change to political reforms that will allow voters to vote for what they want and politicians to be able to deliver it. Mr Trump said he would take on that system;特朗普表示,他将挑战这个制度the Republican establishment that hopes to tame him has a different idea. But if he fails, another candidate for change will run the table in 2020.

President Barack Obama kicked off a fierce election year battle with Republicans by nominating a centrist judge to the Supreme Court and warning his political foes against acting on threats to block him. Mr Obama on Wednesday named Merrick Garland, 63, to replace Antonin Scalia, a conservative justice who died last month, deliberately choosing an appeals court judge who has in the past won praise from Republicans. The vacancy left by Scalia has thrust the Supreme Court into the heart of acrimonious election year politics, putting up for grabs the ideological tilt of an institution with a profound influence on American government and society. Senate Republicans on Wednesday reiterated their determination to block any nominee in Mr Obama’s final year in office, insisting that voters should be given a say by allowing the next president to fill the vacancy. Announcing his pick in the White House Rose Garden, Mr Obama urged Republicans to rethink and fulfil what he described as their constitutional duty by considering Mr Garland instead of treating him as a “political pi#241;ata 在白宫玫瑰园公布自己的提名人选时,奥巴马敦促共和党人三思,履行他所描述的共和党人的宪法责任,对加兰进行考察,而不是把他视为一个“政治玩偶”Mr Garland who is likely to be given a rough ride by some Republicans is the chief judge at the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit, a regular stepping stone to the top court where Scalia also served. (US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit)的首席法官,这是通往最高法院的跳板。 A White House official noted that Mr Garland was confirmed as an appeals court judge with majority support from both parties when he was nominated in 1997 by President Bill Clinton. In 2010 Orrin Hatch, a senior Republican senator, described him as a “consensus nomineefor the Supreme Court when he was considered for a vacancy that year. But Mr Hatch, the longest-serving member of the Senate judiciary committee, quickly shot down any hope of Republicans agreeing to hold hearings, let alone a vote, on Mr Garland’s nomination. Scalia’s death ended a conservative majority that held sway on the court for a quarter of a century, leaving it split 4-4 between the remaining conservatives and their liberal counterparts, who face landmark cases on immigration, abortion and healthcare. Republicans do not want Mr Obama to tilt its balance leftward, but they are taking a gamble that a member of their own party will win November’s presidential election and appoint another conservative. If the Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton won the White House and the Senate flipped into Democratic hands, she could feel empowered to nominate a justice more liberal than Mr Garland. Mrs Clinton praised Mr Garland in a statement on Wednesday and urged the Senate to give him “a full and fair hearing followed by a vote 周三,希拉里在声明中称赞了加兰,并敦促参议院就他获提名“进行一次全面、公正的听,然后再投票表决”。

Plans for a new airline dedicated to the winter snowsports market were announced in Switzerland last week. PowdAir is due to begin operations in December, offering direct flights from six UK airports as well as Rotterdam and Brussels to Sion, capital of the Valais canton. The services will be a boon for skiers, dramatically cutting transfer times to some of Switzerland’s top resorts. The runway at Sion is just two miles from the closest ski lift, at Veysonnaz. Verbier is 10 miles away as the crow flies, Zermatt is 24 miles. PowdAir plans to use a 109-seat Fokker 100 aircraft and fly five days per week, from Thursday to Monday. Seats will cost between 9 and 50 one-way, including ski carriage. Details of the airline were released at a meeting between airline executives and regional tourism officials at Sion Airport on Thursday. “We are in talks with local tour operators and resorts to put in place infrastructure for skiersonward travel from Sion, said Rob Stewart, a spokesman for PowdAir. “When skiers get to Sion there needs to be an efficient way of getting to the resorts rather than having to book a taxi.” For the first winter season, flights will be operated by Trade Air, an existing Croatia-based airline.
