Facebook has been blocked in China since 2009, but the company has long expressed a desire to enter the Chinese market. On Wednesday, Facebook’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, gave a dramatic display of his interest in the country, speaking in Chinese for about a half-hour at a forum at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He discussed his thoughts on innovation in China, Facebook’s future in the country and why he is studying Chinese. His Mandarin is far from perfect, but his first few words were received with cheers and applause by the assembled students and faculty members. “Hello everyone. Thanks for coming,” he told the group. “I’m very glad to be in Beijing. I love this city. My Chinese is really a mess, but I study using Chinese every day.”“大家好。 “Perhaps I need practice,” he added, to laughter from the group.“我可能需要练习,”他在听众的欢笑声中补充道。Mr. Zuckerberg joined the advisory council of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management this week, and his talk was with students and faculty of the school. Asked why he studied the language, Mr. Zuckerberg said his wife Priscilla Chan’s family members speak Chinese. Her grandmother was “very shocked,” he said, when he told her in Chinese that he and Ms. Chan planned to marry. He said that while he knows more words in Mandarin, his wife also speaks Cantonese and has much better listening comprehension than he does. “One time I asked her, why is my listening comprehension so bad?” Mr. Zuckerberg said. “She said, ‘Your listening comprehension in English is also bad.’” Mr. Zuckerberg’s new association with Tsinghua University shows how Facebook is playing the long game in China. The hope appears to be that engagement with China, along with Facebook’s current operations selling advertisements to Chinese companies, will help the company some day open a form of its website in China. In China, Western Internet companies like Google and Twitter have also faced blockages, mainly because of concerns in Beijing that the free flow of information in the country could lead to instability. The professional social network LinkedIn was allowed to open a Chinese language site in the country after agreeing to censor politically sensitive content posted within China. When asked about Facebook’s plans in China, Mr. Zuckerberg took two big gulps from his water bottle to laughter, and then said, “We’re aly in China,” to more laughs. “We help Chinese companies increase foreign customers, they use Facebook ads to find more customers,” he explained, citing how Lenovo uses Facebook to advertise in Indonesia. He added that Facebook had worked with Hangzhou and Qingdao to help those Chinese cities attract visitors via their Facebook pages.“我们帮助中国的公司增长国外的客户,他们用Facebook广告找到更多的客户,”他解释道,还举了联想在印度尼西亚用Facebook做广告的例子。 “We want to help other places in the world connect to China,” he said.“我们想帮助世界其他地方连接中国,”他说。On innovation, Mr. Zuckerberg said China boasted a number of the world’s most innovative companies. He mentioned that he had dinner with Lei Jun, the founder of the Chinese smartphone upstart Xiaomi. “It’s a very innovative company,” Mr. Zuckerberg said. “It has a quick development with different products. They’re very cheap,” he said, spurring more laughs from the crowd. “China is a great country,” he said, adding that studying the language helped him understand the culture. Finally, he said he studied the language because, “I like challenges.”“中国是一个伟大的国家,”他说,并补充说,学习中文帮助他了解中国文化。 It remains to be seen what will happen with Facebook in China, but getting into the country with a social media site resembling the one the company operates around the world could prove even harder than learning Chinese. Some people dream about becoming the next Mark Zuckerberg. How distressing, then, that only nine states count computer science as credit toward high school graduation. The number of U.S. schools teaching computer science has actually declined in the past eight years. Two wealthy and well-connected coders I know today launched a star-studded about getting kids and educators jazzed about coding. Hadi and Ali Partovi, who are funding the film and their new Code.org with their own millions, persuaded tech stars like Bill Gates, Zappos (AMZN) founder Tony Hsieh, Square CEO Jack Dorsey, and Facebook#39;s (FB) Zuckerberg, to talk about why learning to code is a must and how coding figures in their own success. The doesn#39;t reveal the Partovi brothers#39; own story--a fascinating tale about how learning to code propelled them. Born in Iran in 1972, the twin brothers lived there during their first 12 years. ;It was a scary time under an Islamic totalitarian government at war with Iraq,; says Hadi. The boys taught themselves to code on a Commodore 64 computer that their dad, a professor at Iran#39;s leading technical university, brought home from Italy. Education was paramount in the Partovi family. When they got out of Iran in 1984, parents and twins slept in a bedroom in their grandparents#39; Tarrytown, New York home--saving money so the boys could attend private school. Geeks of equal measure (Hadi was valedictorian, Ali was salutatorian in high school), they worked their way through Harvard teaching computer science. Hadi and Tony Hsieh, on a Harvard Computer Programming team together, placed seventh in a global coding competition. Then the brothers scored in the startup world. On the founding teams of Tellme (Hadi) and LinkExchange (Ali)--Hsieh#39;s pre-Zappos startup--the brothers both made money selling those companies to Microsoft (MSFT). Leveraging college connections, they also invested early in Facebook, Dropbox, Airbnb, and Zappos. ;Go to Harvard, meet the smartest people and invest in them,; advises Hadi. ;That#39;s the best way to make money.;哈迪建议:“上哈佛大学,认识最聪明的人,对他们进行投资,这就是挣钱的最好方法。”Oh, and learn to Code. Their new --directed by Lesley Chilcott, a producer of Waiting for Superman and An Inconvenient Truth--will be shown in schools and in movie theaters, thanks to Microsoft#39;s sponsorship. The short film is smart and entertaining, but as you might expect, some of the best stuff landed on the cutting room floor. Here#39;s an outtake that the Partovi brothers shared with us exclusively: Mark Zuckerberg on how he inspired one kid to code. /201303/227982WARNING: Holding a cellphone against your ear or storing it in your pocket may be hazardous to your health. This paraphrases a warning that cellphone manufacturers include in the small printthat is often tossed aside when a new phone is purchased. Apple, for example, doesn't want iPhones to come closer to you than 1.5 centimeters; Research In Motion, BlackBerry's manufacturer, recommends 2.5 centimeters. If health issues arise from cellphone use, the implications are huge. Voice calls - Americans chat on cellphones 2.26 trillion minutes annually - generate 9 billion for the wireless carriers. Devra Davis, an epidemiologist who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh, has published a book about cellphone radiation, "Disconnect." The book surveys scientific research and concludes the question is not settled. Brain cancer is a concern that Ms. Davis examines. Over all, there has not been an increase in its incidencesince cellphones arrived. But the average masks an increase in brain cancer in the 20-to-29 age group and a drop for the older population.

The developers in the audience at WWDC may have missed the significance of the attention Apple AAPL 1.41% paid Monday to Spotlight — the little magnifying glass on the top right hand corner of the Mac’s home screen — but Ad Age didn’t. When it was released in 2005, Spotlight was simply a quick and convenient way to search the contents of your local hard drive — to locate a document, say, or a lost e-mail. It’s been quietly gathering power with each new iteration: doubling as a calculator or a dictionary and offering Boolean (and/or) searches. But in OS X Yosemite, the new Mac operating system unveiled Monday, Spotlight comes front and center — literally. When you tap on the magnifying glass, a search window pops up in the middle of the screen. And when you type a few characters, it doesn’t just search your local computer, it searches the Internet as well, delivering maps, Wikipedia articles and Web results stripped of their ads. Repeat: Stripped of their ads. Microsoft MSFT -1.23% is delighted that Apple is using its Bing service to search the Web. “Last year Bing became the default web search for Siri, and will now also be the default web search provider in the redesigned Spotlight search feature for the next generation of iOS and OS X,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Ad Age. “We’re excited about extending the Bing platform to help iOS and Mac customers find what they need to get things done.” Google GOOG -1.62% will not be so happy. Advertising — especially U.S. search advertising — pays for nearly everything Google does, from building driverless cars to wiring whole cities with fiber optics. According to eMarketer estimates, Google took in 70.8% of the .92 billion spent on U.S. search advertising last year. If Apple hopes to disrupt Google by giving the information away for free, it’s got its work cut out for it. 正如Ad Age指出:“Apple’s search tool shows only a few results per query, meaning a lot less real estate for results. That means Apple would have to prove that its small number of results are accurate enough to fulfill someone’s query. Good-enough search has never been enough to unseat or take share from Google.”“苹果搜索工具每次查询只显示很少的几个结果。。

QQAnd so it has finally arrived: the long-awaited, much-anticipated Apple Watch. Don’t call it an iWatch; this is a new era, people. OMG! OMG! OMG! And all that. Because it is Fashion Week, however, and because this is an accessory, I thought it was only fitting – pun intended – that we ask the same question of the wearable (which is another word for clothes, after all) that we ask of the other accessories we see during the week: does it look good on? Is it, finally, a wearables game changer? It’s definitely a step forward. But does it rewrite the rules of our aesthetic expectations? No.没有。The big, giant, amazing thing about the Apple Watch, sartorially speaking, is that it looks like … a watch. Not a device. That is, clearly, an enormous step forward for a gizmo that has the functionality of the Apple Watch. The two other wearable devices introduced this week at New York Fashion Week – the Samsung Galaxy S and the Intel/Opening Ceremony MICA – look like big bangles in comparison: they have much larger rectangular curved screens embedded in hard plastic, or snakeskin-covered plastic, bands. The Apple Watch by contrast, has a much smaller, squarer face (it looks a bit like a super chic Nano), framed in stainless steel or aluminum or specially treated super-strong 18-carat gold. It is the first wearable watch to come in two sizes – 38 millimeter and 42 millimeter, presumably for men and women, and it comes in three different lines (Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition, the latter being the most corporate up-market version). It has an enormous number of interchangeable bands that look just like normal watch bands, including leather and stainless-steel bracelets. The only ones it does not seem to offer are evening, or black-tie appropriate, styles. (Which is an oversight to my mind, given that the time a slim, attractive watch/communication device most comes in handy is during an evening event when quick peeks at technology are not appropriate. But maybe that’s just me.) Apple is billing the watch as its “most personal device ever,” because aside from all those straps, you can also swap among 11 watch faces (normal, butterfly and Mickey Mouse, for example). The funny thing is, while I understand why they find this sort of choice extraordinary in the tech world, it’s par for the course in fashion, which points up some of the gulf between the two sectors; What they find revolutionary makes us want to yawn. But back to the watch. It even has a “crown” – that dial on the side of a chronograph that you normally use for winding, but that here acts as a scroll so you don’t have to worry about a fat-fingers problem on a tiny screen. All of which is smart, and slick, and even chic. But it doesn’t make you reimagine the whole concept of how a watch you might wear everyday should look. It makes you reimagine what a watch that you might wear everyday should do. That’s a meaningful distinction. In other words, unlike, say, the iPhone, which resembled no other phone on the market when it appeared, or the iPod, the Apple Watch is firmly in watch aesthetic vernacular – just not other connected watch vernacular. Rather, it speaks the visual language of ye olde-fashioned watches. Ironic, isn’t it? They had to look backward to go forward. Which means, in turn, that the truly mind-boggling bit of all this is the fact that Apple figured out how to fit ALL THAT TECHNOLOGY into that relatively wee bit of hardware. Intel, for example, had to distribute its board throughout the MICA, which is why the bangle is the size that it is. Put another way: the shocking thing, the innovative thing, about the Apple Watch is that it can look as normal as it does while doing all the things it does (including opening hotel doors, if you have the Starwood app). So, while it may indeed change behavior, and may indeed threaten some in Switzerland, I don’t think Patek Philippe should be shivering in its boots. Of course, the Apple Watch will start at 9 when it goes on sale next year, and even presuming that the rose-gold version will cost a whole lot more, it probably won’t reach the Patek pricing league. Apple isn’t saying. So Swatch, on the other hand. …
