Ever found yourself dumped by a friend embarking on a romance? Don't worry, you're probably not the only one. For according to Oxford University scientists, every time we start a relationship we jettison two of our closest friends。 Most of us simply don't have enough time for intimate friendships with more than four or five people, their research shows。 And a new love interest leads to two friends being pushed out of the inner circle。 Professor Robin Dunbar, one of Britain's leading experts in evolutionary biology, explained: 'If you go into a romantic relationship it actually costs you two friends in that inner core of relationships。 'Instead of having the typical five friends, they only have four in that inner circle. And bearing in mind that one of those is the new person that has come into your life, it means you have to give up two others.' Men tend to have four or five intimate friends, women five or six, he said。 However, men were just as likely to jettison friends at the start of a new romantic attachment as women, found the study of those aged 18 to 60. 'Your attention is so wholly focused on the romantic partners, you just don't get to see the other folks you had a lot to do with before,' the professor told the British Science Festival in Birmingham. 'Those relationships start to deteriorate.' But it's not just romance that can push out close friends, he explained. Children or buying a dog can have the same effect。 'You can only have five slots for deeply intense and meaningful relations. Those individuals don't have to be human. They can be your dog - or your favourite chrysanthemum plant. They can be people in an entirely fictional world - they can be soap opera characters. They can be God or they can be saints.' /201009/113984

Do women cheat as much as men do?by Erin Flaherty, Shine stafThat's the first question the latest infidelity studies point to. The second is: If you cheated on your spouse, would you even admit it to a researcher?Historically, the male sex gets most of the flak when it comes to infidelity among spouses. But that could be due to those tired old gender roles we're cast in. A recent New York Times report implies that women may simply be more likely to lie about it for that very reason. Research professor of anthropology at Rutgers Helen E. Fisher suggests that, “Men want to think women don’t cheat, and women want men to think they don’t cheat, and therefore the sexes have been playing a little psychological game with each other.” Fun!“Is it that men are bragging about it and women are lying to everybody including themselves?” she asks. Makes sense. After all, it's no secret that the widely held double standard that men who cheat are "studs" while women are "sluts" is still disturbingly prevalent.Still, the changes in the landscape of cheating have surprised researchers who have found that infidelity is on the rise and "women appear to be closing the adultery gap: younger women appear to be cheating on their spouses nearly as often as men."That's not to say that the guys are entirely off the hook. Medical advances like Viagra and erectile dysfunction remedies ensure that those with XY chromosomes can cheat longer and um, stronger. But when it comes to the younger set, women may be finding more opportunities to cheat via interoffice affairs and the good 'ole World Wide Web. While men might be content to "stray" by looking at porn--a relatively benign form of infidelity in the grand scheme of things--Atlanta psychiatrist Dr. Frank Pittman notes that he's observed more women acknowledging sexual affairs that began with electronic contact born out of the desire to emotionally connect with someone on a more intimate (and therefore stereotypically "feminine") level. So yes, it would appear that women certainly cheat more than they're usually given credit for. (Of course, who wants to take credit for something as damaging as an extramarital affair?) But when it comes to our original second question pertaining to the idea that the fairer sex is more likely to lie about it due to societal double standards, one wonders if the modern woman has just become more open about her transgressions than in the past?In the absence of hard and fast numbers--as opposed to all this admittedly speculative research--when it comes to adultery, here's the real question for the ladies out there: Have you ever cheated and well, kept mum about the damn thing? (As opposed to say, bragging about your conquests in the locker room or whatever?)

This is the makeup item you should be most vigilant about: As the brush is taken out, applied, and put back in the tube, it brings with it any bacteria that has collected along the way, explains cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer. Lingering bacteria can cause redness and itchiness, or even conjunctivitis (a.k.a. pinkeye) and sties. Switch mascara every two to three months to be safe. "It will also have a distinct gasoline-like smell once it's gone bad," says makeup artist Pati Dubroff. If you develop any negative symptoms, immediately throw out any of your eye makeup that may have been contaminated. If your eyes are still irritated a day or two later, see an eye doctor。 With the exception of powder formulas, all foundations are water-based, which means bacteria love them. Unopened, foundation can last for a couple of years, but once the seal is broken, Hammer says, it's best to replace it after 6 to 12 months. Keep foundations out of moist environments (such as your bathroom) and away from heat, as high temperatures encourage the growth of the bugs and can speed up the spoiling—true for beauty products in general. An off smell or a change in color tells you the formula is finished—applying it could cause irritation or breakouts。 Concealers are meant to cover blemishes, not cause them—which is what can happen if you use a concealer that's too old. "You'll know it's gone bad because the color will start to shift," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson. Concealers in powder and stick form can last for up to two years, while liquids should be tossed after one。 /201012/119656

So, you know, it is what it is, but Americans are totally annoyed by the use of "whatever" in conversations. The popular slacker term of indifference was found "most annoying in conversation" by 47 percent of Americans surveyed in a Marist College poll. Whatever" easily beat out "you know," which especially grated a quarter of respondents. The other annoying contenders were "anyway" (at 7 percent), "it is what it is" (11 percent) and "at the end of the day" (2 percent)."Whatever" 轻松击败"you know(你知道)"位居榜首,另有四分之一的受访者称最讨厌后者。其它入选最惹人厌的用语还包括"anyway(总之;反正)(7%)","it is what it is(这就是事实)"(11%),以及"at the end of the day(到头来)"(2%)。"Whatever"--pronounced "WHAT'-ehv-errr" when exasperated--is an expression_r_r with staying power. Immortalized in song by Nirvana ("oh well, whatever, nevermind") in 1991, popularized by the Valley girls in "Clueless" later that decade, it is still commonly used, often by younger people."Whatever"是一个带有忍耐意味的表达,在语气加重时,它常被说成"WHAT'-ehv-errr"。 It can be an all-purpose argument-ender or a signal of apathy. And it can really be annoying. The poll found "whatever" to be consistently disliked by Americans regardless of their race, gender, age, income or where they live."Whatever"可在结束争论时使用,或者可用来表示漠不关心,这个词的确令人反感。

Good posture has many benefits. With good posture, you will experience improved physical, emotional, and mental health. Here are 5 reasons to have good posture.Good posture contributes to the health of your spine. If you have a healthy spine, you will decrease the likelihood of back pain. A lot of neck and back pain and brittleness come from years of uneven stresses on your spinal column or from misaligned vertebrae constantly grinding against each other. Poor posture can also cause stretched out or shortened ligaments around the vertebrae, which can lead to discomfort and increase the risk of injuries, headaches and TMJ.Your posture affects the health of your organs. Poor posture can constrict or put pressure on organs, restricting blood flow to them and inhibiting their proper functioning. It can also lead to tension in the body, which could prevent the smooth muscles of the digestive system and respiratory tract from working as they should. Those muscles need to be relaxed to do their work.Posture influences confidence and sense of overall well-being. Feeling well-balanced and comfortable affects the way you feel about yourself and the way others perceive you. You feel more powerful when your body feels strong and stable. When you stand up tall and have your shoulders back, your body is naturally more relaxed and your breathing is easier. Yoga master BKS Iyengar told his students, “Always keep your armpit chest open and you’ll never be depressed.”Good posture leads to better body mechanics. This means that your athleticism will improve, so you’ll perform better in physical activities and also enjoy them more. You will tire less easily, feel less sore after you exercise, and also be less prone to injuries.Proper posture will enhance cognitive function because a properly aligned spinal cord will be able to send and receive messages to the brain unimpeded. All of the factors mentioned above will also aid your cognitive function. You will be less distracted by pain and fatigue, and you will sleep better. You’ll feel more confident and relaxed, and improved organ function will mean more nutrients and energy are available to nourish your brain. /200901/60318

Increasing obesity has prompted an Australian state to seek larger planes for the country's famous "Flying Doctor" service, ambulance and government officials said Saturday.New South Wales state has just put out a tender to assess the cost of obtaining two larger new planes for its air ambulance fleet, which is flown under contract by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to service remote and rural areas.Recent global surveys have repeatedly highlighted Australians as among the most obese people in the world, despite the country's association with an active, healthy lifestyle and love of sport. The two new planes would be able to carry patients up to 260 kg (573 lb), nearly twice the current limit of 140 kg (308 lb), a spokeswoman for the state's health ministry told Reuters."The ambulance service has obviously seen a need," the spokeswoman said.A New South Wales ambulance service spokeswoman said it followed similar moves by other parts of the service, including ground ambulances and helicopters, to accommodate larger patients.Asked if the move was prompted by increasing levels of obesity, she told the repoters: "Essentially, yes."Royal Flying Doctor Service: /200901/60653

不可不知的好莱坞新词好莱坞明星的分分合合引人关注,但是你是否知道明星的分合居然也能够创造新词呢?starter wife \stahr-ter wahyf\ n: long-suffering woman who marries and emotionally supports a man through his lean years—maybe paying his way through medical school, or holding his hand while he auditions for non-speaking roles. Once he's reached the pinnacle of success and is making millions pumping lips full of collagen or gracing the silver screen, the starter wife is kicked to the curb in favor of a younger or more famous new mate.
